I just logged in to do my evening reviews, and I was greeted with something that I’m pretty sure is new? When a card asking for the reading of a vocabulary word with okurigana comes up, if I haven’t included the correct okurigana in my answer, it…gives me a screen shake and won’t let me submit my answer.
When I’m moving through reviews, I try to do them pretty quickly. When I come upon a word I don’t know the reading for (and it’s a word that I know I don’t know), I don’t want to waste time typing out multiple characters as a guess. I just type ‘a’ (あ).
But now that only works sometimes, because the system wants me to type げる or す or しい or whatever else to match the okurigana. I know it’s only a fraction of a second, but man, is it annoying to get that shake and have to retype my answer when I’m in a groove. I already protect myself from typos with the undo script, too.
Maybe this new feature could be altered so that something like pressing enter twice overrides the “You’re missing some visible kana” warning? Short of a keyboard shortcut for “I don’t know this” (which would probably cause problems for other reasons), that seems like the easiest solution to me.
Yeah, I’m already using another add-on for typos and it was REALLY hard to “fail” the word I didn’t know. It seems you need to type “something + る” now.
Agreed. Could we please make this feature optional? I rely on the Anki Mode addon because it saves me a lot of time by eliminating the need to type answers. However, with the new typo protection in place, I find myself having to disable the addon, delete some of the kana, type again, and then re-enable the addon, rather than simply pressing a button to move to the next item.
Ah, I test tested and it works on the meaning questions, but not the reading ones. It does seem to prevent the answer now if it does not at least contain the okurigana (or the “visible kana” as the message is calling it).
Pure and simple, this is just a case, yet again, of hubris on the part of the WK development team.
This ‘feature’ never should have been approved for final release because obviously they never tested it with real users.
And furthermore, they have literally more than 10 years of data to look for common usage patterns and should have known that it is very common for folks to enter a single character entry like あ or い for the purposes of failing the review on purpose!
Wake up, WK dev team! If you’ve lost all the people who know how to handle software releases, then hire someone who does. (Or at the very least, take a crash course in software development practices and principles, before you make any more releases in the future.) This is beginner stuff.
Looks like this feature applies to any vocab with hiragana. Seems like you have to type all the visible hiragana in order to fail the review. For 軽い I was made to type い to fail the review, and for 求める I couldn’t just type る, but had to type める. For words with only kanji, my default of お worked.
I just played around with it and it seems like it gives the shake anytime that you are missing kana or if you’ve made a typo on the kana like typing 女な人 instead of 女の人.
I get that it is annoying for a subset of people, but I think this change is going to help more people than it is going to annoy.
I do agree that you should be able to just hit enter again to lock in your wrong answer or “?” should be accepted as a universal “I don’t know” answer to move ahead.
I don’t know, I think intentionally failing readings is something that I can see all or almost all users needing to do. I think it probably helps and hurts in equal measure, though for me personally it’s way more harmful.
It seems like a sort of meeting-in-the-middle fix for typo protection–it avoids the undo button, which the site designers are philosophically opposed to, but gives users some leeway to make typos without failing words entirely.
For that reason, I think there really needs to be some kind of workaround. I don’t think the feature itself is awful. I just think it needs some alteration. I am still partial to my initial suggestion: have hitting enter a second time allow me to submit the “wrong kana” I have typed!
I don’t like the question mark because then I have to hit shift + /, as opposed to just a or i. And it would be even more cumbersome on mobile…
Just another change that makes me glad that I’ll be putting WK behind me soon. I know finishing is arbitrary and I could just quit now, but I want to make it to 60!
This issue only applies to readings, not to meanings. Specifically, readings of kanji with okurigana (the kana that are attached to kanji in certain words, like the しい in 楽しい). I suspect that’s why @NeoArcturus was able to input い. 善悪 has no okurigana, so it won’t trigger the shake.
In any case, to be thorough, I disabled all my scripts.
For what it’s worth, I like this new feature, even though it confused me the first time I ran into it (trying to fail a review on purpose). There really ought to be a way to fail a review on purpose without having to type in all visible kana though.
