NANA―ナナ― 👩‍🎤 Week 3

Yeah you’re right. More broadly, 軒 is a building counter.

Agreed that they’re being harsh, but yeah… in the case of 章司 he could probably be communicating better too though his frustration makes sense anyway with how she’s oblivious to how she acts, but like I said it really jumped out to me this chapter how 奈々 is SO focused on herself at all times that I kinda get people’s patience running thin, even though I also feel really bad for her.

reply p.68

あれ is more specifically referring not to location but to “that thing, something understood without naming it directly”. She struggles to come up with 1 fitting word, and continues with a fuller explanation.

I’d translate it as

しかし東京ってとこはあれだね
eeeh, but Tokyo is, you know,

You can also hear this あれ in scenes like classmates whispering rumors behind MC’s back: “that guy is, you know(あれ)… (unpleasant rumor incoming)”

reply p.68

I think you are spot on with what あれ does in the sentence, thanks! Much better than my attempt, and I’ll start translating this sense of あれ that way from now on in my head.

I got the {location, place} sense from ってとこ(ろ). I think this could be potentially confusing, as it’s also common to say ってこと that is used to nominalize or restate things. I wouldn’t have batted an eye if it was used here, and then it would be a mistake to use “place” in the translation.

I’m also not sure I’m not overindexing on とこ here.

we’ve to stop here? can’t read further? wow I really enjoyed this chapter so much, and can’t wait to read more, but ofc I’m not going to read ahead because it’s fun to read along with the group!

spoilers

I’m very familiar with the type of characters who go like, “Men and women can’t be friends,” because it’s quite a common notion even in my country. But man, I hate it from the bottom of my heart when I see dialogues like that.

Really not seeing 章司’s appeal anymore. I did like him in the beginning because he was nice and not pushy about his feelings, but if he can’t share a room with a girl because he can’t control himself, then man TT. Like yukitanuki said, he’s probably also going to regret leaving her alone at night like that.

I do understand his outburst and totally get that he had to stop Nana from being so silly at one point - but exactly when did he confess his feelings? It’s not fair that he’s angry about “being friends” when he hasn’t even openly talked about his feelings, and when Nana has been very vocal about being only friends with him. But I totally get his annoyance with other aspects.

Also like everyone mentioned, Nana is also very immature and makes me wanna pull out my hair. The weird part is that I relate to her so much. :joy: All my friends moved away from my hometown to go abroad, and I’m the only one who chose to stay here. It really does feel like everyone’s abandoning you and that you’re staying behind, even though moving somewhere else doesn’t automatically mean moving forward in life. Getting rambly here, but while I relate to her emotions, she is very selfish and does things that are very self-centered.

All that said, I actually can’t wait for her to go to Tokyo, meet the other Nana, and get out of her little delusional bubble to experience more of life and human relationships.

章ちゃん

I agree completely, in fact @Daisoujou knows that I have a very similar issue in our Trails videogame club.

I still want to cut 章司 some slack though. Yes he says dumb things, but then Nana is not exactly faring much better on that front. And they’re both super young, you can’t expect emotional maturity from these characters.

Regarding sharing the room, it’s of course absolutely natural that Nana would want to feel safe to sleep next to a friend, but she also needs to respect Shou’s boundaries. It’s not like he agreed to sleep in the same room and then became all weird about it, he was against it from the moment Nana proposed it and she steamrolled over him. He overreacts and doesn’t express himself very well, but I do think he has the right to complain that he’s been forced into an uncomfortable situation on a whim by Nana who didn’t bother asking for his opinion.

As @eagleflo mentions above, she’s quick to whip out the 大好き. I do get the feeling that, not having had male friends before, she’s not navigating the situation very well and ends up sending mixed messages to Shou. I do agree that the adult reaction for him would be to put things on the table and talk about it, but then again, they’re still teens after all.

章ちゃん

Oh yes, agreed. Thanks for giving me this perspective. I actually didn’t think about it that way because my brain kinda shut down the min we had that conversation about lack of control and that “I will 襲うぞ” part lol

I guess I’m just too used to reading either fantasy or very mature slice of life/romance that I keep forgetting everyone here is a teen :sob:

With this part though, I didn’t really think that she sent out mixed signals but rather that he completely misunderstood it because he cannot fathom being friends with a girl (like he confirms later). Cause they do talk about it veryyy briefly after and she says something along the lines of “I like you not as a man, but as a fellow human being” or something? (I may be messing this dialogue up it’s late at night)

But yeah, I agree with your point that they’re young and dumb and unaware of how to express their thoughts and emotions. I totally sense some series of emotional of scenes coming up - with her dealing with that ex lover and with him regretting and finding her etc

I think she uses the term 雄 which seems to surprise him. I’m not entirely sure I understand the deep nuance that this word has in Japanese, but I think I’ve mostly seen it used for animals, so I guess it’s “male” but in a very zoological way? Like how “mâle” is used in French for instance, if that helps.

This was my understanding, too. Like it has a scientific nuance to it, kind of like she’s saying “male specimens” or something like that

I knowww this is how I feel every week. I want to keep reading further, but I am trying to keep myself on track so I have the latest sections fresh in my mind for book club discussion purposes

I agree with so much of your whole post, too. Yazawa’s writing is honestly so amazing to me because the characters are some of the most realistic and three-dimensional I’ve ever seen in manga (or pretty much anywhere). The characters are so frustrating and lovable and weird all at the same time!

Hehe same feeling, but it’s so much fun (re)discovering everything with everyone!

On another topic, I’ve been having problems with the space key on my keyboard, and it’s funny because it’s not a problem when I type in Japanese but it is really annoying me when I type in other languages. So I’ve been thinking, “why don’t we do like the Japanese and stop using spaces!!”.

Well, that’s why I guess.

Wait you don’t use space for kanji conversion?

I only write in katakana is my secret. (Nope, I use arrows and the Enter key)

What’s love got to do with it?

A very good Japanese male friend once said virtually the same thing to me that 章司’s saying here. I had to smile then and now. If women could only do it when they were in love, there would be no sex industry - sorry boys, lust is just as possible for women.

I am ready for week 4

Hehe. Actually curious to know if it makes a difference, let us know when you get there!

Thoughts

Maybe I’m just being optimistic about the situation, but I thought it was less “I will literally 襲う you” and more “I really want to have sex with you but I don’t want to rape you and I’m not comfortable having to navigate what I’m feeling because you made a rash decision” Maybe I’m giving him too much credit?

The argument in the city was weird because I kinda understood where each of them was coming from. At first I thought he was doing the lying to get the other person to hate you and leave thing, but combined with the storming off it feels more genuine.

Also annoyed at the boys and girls can’t be friends thing. Sure, each individual time it comes up it’s like, okay so apparently people can’t just turn off attraction so I get not wanting to be platonic if they’re always going to have in the back of their head they’d rather it’s romantic. But that sure is a lot of individual times it’s coming up.
