捩じり (ねじり)

Torque aka rotational force aka one of the many real world factors to account for regarding the physics of rotating things

捩る (ねじる) means to screw to I guess it makes sense.

Not sure why the difference in okurigana though.

I have a confession: I’m posting a word specifically because I, in fact, have not learned it. 捕まる (つかまる). It means to be caught or arrested (well, according to Jisho also to hold on to; to grasp; to find (e.g. proof); to get (e.g. a taxi); to be detained by… I’d be happy to just remember this one meaning though).

My brain just cannot contain this word. It’s one of those that I just went through an Anki session where I failed this word, then rotated through it several more times when going through the repeated words I got wrong. I could see 捕まる, make a serious effort to direct all of my attention at it, then 5 cards later, get annoyed at how I somehow forgot it in less than a minute. My neural connections are broken. Today, it has won.

So here I am, posting it here, in the hopes that taking the word and talking about it will help it stick. 捕まる. To be arrested or caught. 捕まる. Arrested. 捕まる. Caught.

捕まる.

興味津々 - to be interested in

This seems to be a drop-in replacement for 興味がある in most cases. For example:

ペンギンに興味がある
ペンギンに興味津々

This is also an idiomatic 四字熟語 so you might want to not overuse it

Would it help you in any way to pronounce it aloud in different voices or with different intonations and think of something related to catching? Like catching a criminal? Grasping a rail on a subway? Getting caught while stealing a bicycle (I dearly hope not!)?

That’s how I usually learn tricky readings.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll give it a shot! Just figured doing anything more unusual to highlight the particular word might help, too. Like, I still remember 小麦粉 from having first posted it here, and I made zero effort to try to remember that and haven’t come across it since. Feels like the act of posting words creates its own unique connection, if I don’t overdo it.

Got 桜肉(さくらにく) in a lesson just now, so immediately looked up why that is the word. Was able to mostly understand the first result that came up in Japanese, https://kumamoto-basasi.com/mt/culture/history/328.html. Sure I’ve heard it before but had forgotten the meat thing.
