鬱陶しい - うっとうしい, meaning “gloomy, depressing” or “irritating, troublesome”. That’s a lot of radicals for such a general word, but I guess that’s depressing or at least troublesome so it fits.
覆る・くつがえる・to be overturned; to be capsized; to be toppled; to be reversed
覆す・くつがえす・to overturn; to capsize; to topple; to overthrow; to reverse
Heard Edo Phoenix (Aster Phoenix) using the word 覆す in Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links:
さぁ、覆してみろ。。。お前の運命を!
~ “So, just try and turn the tide … of destiny!”
It caught my interest, because it feels like a -返す compound, although I’m not sure what the first component would be.
At first I thought maybe 靴 (くつ - shoes) was an old word for “bottom” or “surface” or something, but I can’t find anything to support that; Gogen suggests it may be a mimetic onomatopoeia, or possibly related to the words 蹴る and 足る, while Wiktionary points to a possible connection tot he Korean word 구두 (gudu).
Still, I can remember the word 覆る by thinking of the expression “The shoe’s on the other foot, now!”
While looking into possible etymologies of the words 覆る and 靴, I saw the same kanji used in the Wikipedia article on 靴, but with a completely different kun’yomi and meaning:
覆う・おおう・to cover; to permeate; to include everything
Not sure I’ll remember this word quite as well, but I suppose I might remember a large sea (oo u) covering everything.
Alternatively, there is the nominalized form 覆い (“cover; hood”); if you have a lot (多い) of things, they will cover your floor.
I was listening to a Christmas song in Japanese and thought the whole time they kept saying, “Sori”, they were talking about a sound, because that’s what Sori means, but it didn’t make sense contextually.
Realized a while later that I was thinking of “sori” in Korean. Apparently it means “sled” in Japanese, which makes WAY more sense lmao.
