Most effective way to learn

By Genki do you mean, ‘Genki I Integrated Elementary Japanese course’?

I do. I bought the book but I actually use a pdf, which I’ve converted to make it searchable. If you scour google someone has a drive folder with both volumes including workbooks and audio. I use Genki because that’s what my Japanese tutor recommended. We do about one chapter a month, which is fairly slow, some people would do one in a week or two. If you buy it be aware the workbooks are just extra exercises. This is the actual book/CD https://www.amazon.co.uk/Genki-Second-Integrated-Elementary-Japanese/dp/4789014401/ref=pd_sbs_14_img_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=DH43SGP2JGRQRHJD806X

The only negative thing I would say apart from difficulty reading the furigana (which is mainly because my eyes are bad) is that it might be hard work on your own, without a tutor. I can read the grammar and learn the vocab on my own ok, but doing the exercises is a lot easier and better with a tutor. However with determination you could do them on your own.

Get on amazon Japan if you can. Much Cheaper for me. (Not sure if will be for you.)

Depends on the postage and whether you’re gonna get hit by customs.

Precisely. That’s what I wasn’t sure of. Worth a shot to check out. Usually works for me well in the states, but I know the UK is a completely different matter monster.

Customs is a bummer in the UK. And I buy a lot of stuff from Japan. We get hit for 20% VAT plus £13 charge for processing it! Anything over £15.

Ouch… I feel for you…

Not only that, some stuff you have to post to Tenso and then get them to ship it out of Japan. They are good, but it all takes time and costs money. Amazon jp ship to the uk direct though.

Amazon handles custom on purchase. Japanese Amazon has reasonable shipping rates.
