Hey everyone ![]()
I wanted to share a side project I’ve been working on that builds on WaniKani data:
SukiStudy ![]()
Why I built this
WaniKani has been an incredible tool in helping me learn Kanji! (While walking around in japan I could actually point out and read some kanji thanks to WK!!), but after a couple months I realized I wanted more variety in how I review—especially on days when the standard SRS queue grew because I was falling behind. I’m also traveling a lot, so offline access became important for me.
The goal is not to replace WaniKani at all, but to make reviews feel more playful and flexible, while still respecting the core learning flow.
What SukiStudy does
The app connects to your WaniKani account and lets you
-
Practice through mini-games and alternative formats (including the standard typing review type)
-
Focus on specific item types (hirigana / katakana / radicals / kanji / vocab)
-
Use it offline-first once your data is synced (PWA)
It’s designed to sit alongside WaniKani, not compete with it.
Feedback welcome
First and foremost, I wrote this app for ME so that I can keep doing the reviews without it feeling monotonous.
That said, I’m sharing this to see if it’s useful to others and to get feedback from fellow WK users:
-
What kinds of review modes do you wish existed?
-
Any features you’d want for offline use?
Thanks again WK and WK community for building (and supporting) such a great ecosystem ![]()
