First thread I’ve started, looking for feedback or thoughts on my progress. I’ve doing on avg 15-20 new lessons per day for most of my journey, just now cutting back to 10 lessons per day so I can focus more on listening and reading skills. Went through a beginners grammar book (Japanese from Zero 1) and about to start the second volume of that series which I like a lot.
Starting working on listening skills on Comprehensible Japanese, which I also like for various reasons. Here’s my WK stats so far:
I think you’re doing wonderfully. No real such thing as a good or bad pace necessarily here since we all have different needs and ability- but the rate you’re going at and what you’ve accomplished is impressive and worth being proud of, especially with the other resources you’ve been using alongside it. If things are going well for you, you’re having fun, and are feeling like you’re tangibly learning- I say keep it up
You seem to be doing well with focusing on listening and reading skills, and also liking the learning materials. Furthermore, learning vocabularies and Kanji well on the WaniKani platform, without truly hating learning new items. I think you are doing well!
imo, learning a new language is at time seemingly fast, and also at time seemingly slow. But continuing on, one way or another, is generally better than having to picking it back again after stopping for a while. It’s best not to stop. A lot may need to be learned and acquired, but having a continuous and steady pace is more important.
Assuming you started at zero or near zero, since a year ago, I think it’s not that slow at all. Learning in a few years or something could be reasonable if you aren’t in a hurry.
Thanks for the helpful feedback. Yeah I really enjoy learning Japanese, and did indeed start from zero. Not in a massive hurry to learn, just wanting to keep a consistent and healthy pace so that eventually I can become as “fluent” as possible.
This is my first time learning a new language (not counting the obligatory Spanish from high school that I remember nothing of). I love how Japanese sounds to the ear, it’s very pleasant. Also into anime pretty heavily and about to take my 2nd and 3rd trips to Japan this year so that keeps me motivated.
I’ll post updates to progress here (very infrequently), just to hopefully give others motivation.
