I couldn’t find a topic like this that wasn’t ancient, so I decided to make my own.
Sure, hitting those milestones and overcoming large obstacles is an important part of learning. But for me, the most motivating part of studying is often the little things. Things like, “Wow, I can read that entire sentence!” or “I finally learned that one kanji I’ve been seeing everywhere!”
So, why not have a place to share those tiny things that just aren’t a big enough deal for their own threads, but that you’re still happy about?
The one that motivated me to make this thread was seeing a Mario Maker stage titled 右に全力ダッシュだ！, which the creator had helpfully translated into English as “Utmost to wheat dash!!” And I realized, I not only understand what the title is supposed to be, but also how they got to that mistranslation of it.
Nice idea! Don’t have anything right now, though… Haha.
While I can understand the Japanese sentence, I can’t say I get where the mistranslation came from in that Mario stage? Maybe I’m too tired where does it come from, @CheeseSwiftly?
I have those little victories almost daily when I understand a whole message from my girlfriend without having to think about it or looking up parts of it
I managed to read and understand an entire NHK Easy article yesterday! I know they’re easy, but I still often feel like I’m not making any progress, so little things like this really help to keep me motivated :3
I was watching parts of Markiplier’s latest charity livestream, he was playing Dead Space, and when he went to save I saw 2 kanjis looking things (they appear for half a second) I flipped shit and rewound (is that rewind past form or is it just rewind ?) and effectivly saw 石村, aka, the name of the space station you’re in the game, Ishimura, that was fun
Oh and all the kanji that’s used for Love Live characters names, 星空 and 南ことり and 国木田花丸, and the rest you get it, that makes for easy remembering lol
I experienced a small victory yesterday when re-watching Terrace House Boys & girls in the city. Whenever a new member comes to the house, there’s a small info box about them on the screen. I paused the show and tried to read it and I could! I was so proud Also in general understanding more and more what the members / commentators are saying
I recently noticed that my A1 Japanese book says 日本のことばと文化 and I can understand it! And when I was watching some anime with my brother, I noticed that 同日 had been mistranslated to “at the same time”, and I could tell my brother both what the error was and what it should say instead.
I’ve started to teach him some Japanese - as I’m still a complete beginner and he has no prior knowledge, we’ve started slowly working through the Hiragana chart. A few days ago he excitedly told me that he had recognised a few kana around the web, and that he was enthusiastic to learn and understand more. As he’s struggling with chronic depression and hasn’t been motivated to keep up anything for a while, it feels great to see him that happy
The other day I was watching a Japanese tv show and at the part where they list the sponsors I noticed three kanji that I’ve now studied on WK, and should know the readings for:
When I am watching TV Japan and I hear something and recognize it, I am so excited. Also I am able to read some signs once in a while. What a motivator! On New Japan Pro-Wrestling, I am able to understand complete sentences sometimes.
At which level would you say that a WaniKani user would be able to watch テラハ and find it enjoyable with only Japanese subtitles? I have like 5 season of it favourited on my Netflix to watch list…
As WK only teaches you kanji and vocabs and not train you in speed reading (something you’ll need to read the subtitles without always pressing the pause button), there is no real answer to your question, I’m afraid.
