Just curious.
Has anyone (or know of anyone to) hit the nuclear button to reset back to level 1?
When I reach and complete all levels to level 60, I would like to a function to resurrect a whole level rather resurrect individual items to revise.

I think I saw people mention doing the entire course several times. Sounds incredibly tedious to me but whatever floats your boat.
I would guess that there are people with lifetime subs that have completed all 60 levels (mad props to you!).
By my guess (currently on level 40) I could complete all items to level 60 in 1.5+ years. After that, I wouldn’t know what to do

Most definitely need a resurrect level button for the levels you want to revise on.

Is this what you are asking about?
From my understanding you can reset levels to repeat from there. I’m not sure I will want to do that if I complete the full 60 level marathon. Maybe I’ll do it as Kanji (+ radicals) only, but I certainly plan to increase my 日本語 reading. Also, there are other Kanji study methods like ‘Basic Kanji Book’ - Volumes 1 & 2 are for reading and writing the first 500 Kanji. It might be easier to be motivated to do something like that, and having completed WK it will be much easier than from scratch.
I have reset to Level 2, and also purchased yearly sub (to be cancelled in exactly 1 year).
I don’t mind really, as I know I can go over 1/2 way in a year, even not max speed.
I don’t Level 60 as complete in any case (most major Kanji + most major readings?), but early WaniKani has its values. (Say, 10-40. I am now at 42.)
If you define ‘complete a level’ by burning all items, you will never really complete all levels.
I have reached level 60 in January 2021, and I managed to have 0 apprentice and 0 guru items for the first time on March 10 2025. Now, after all additions (and review errors) I am back to:
So I am far from completing as new items are coming.
Should I ever manage to burn all available items I will not reset to level 1. There are better things to do, like grammar, reading, listening and speaking…
I did manage to get 100% burned briefly a cooked of years ago. I think it lasted about 2 weeks before new content was added.

Maybe you could review burnt items if you enjoy SRS and also, as others have said, read more.
I’m doing that right now ![]()
I’ve decided that enjoying native content is more worth my time. It took so long for me to get to level 60 (5 yrs) that I don’t really wanna go through that again.
I suspect I’m forgetting words that aren’t all that common, but reinforcing plenty through reading and gaming.
Is there stuff you might have burned at like level 15 then forgotten anyway that you might remember better if you did wanikani a second time?
Sure.
But I think pretty much anything else is a better use of your time than doing a second entire run of wanikani
I think Leebo has done this multiple times. (I don’t know how to tag people but I would like tag that user for this post.)
After reaching level 60, there’s still a ton of content to burn (I’ve been ‘finished’ for almost a year and still do daily reviews). I also joined bookclubs on the forums and, in the process, ran across vocab that I had definitely learned and forgotten so I unburned those words.
I don’t see a reason to return to level 1 really!
I hit 60 in 2023 ish and reset to 1 in 2024 as I prepped for the N1. Passed N1 in December 24 and am on level 111 (51 for the second time) ![]()
Passed N1? Congrats!
WOW MAD RESPECT!!!
Other than wanikani, what did you do to pass N1 and how long have you been studying Japanese?
It was my Covid project so I had quite a lot of time to dedicate during lockdown. I was in the army at the time and had nothing to do but quarantine in place.
I used rocket japanese levels 1-3, japanesepod101 levels 3-5, tobira textbooks, and shin kanzen master N1. I also meet with an italki tutor once a week for conversation practice.
Since getting out of the army and passing N1 I now work for Mitsubishi Power America and frequently head to Mitsubishi HQ in Japan to translate for my bosses or meet with Japanese clients. 楽しいですよね。
Edit: it’s been about 5 years now, I passed the N1 at just shy of 4
I have! Mixed feelings about it, though. I have relearned some of the kanji and vocabulary I had obviously forgotten, but also it feels like such a chore sometimes going through all the ones I know. I make it lazy by putting on Practical Magic and plowing through them.
Practical Magic?
