Made it to level 43 a few days ago!
I was reluctant to log out and back in again because I didn’t want to lose access to the secret subforum, so it took me a couple days to actually do it… ![]()
Level 42 took me just over fourteen days. It was a bit of a whirlwind for me because I had so many Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling shows to translate. I smashed my previous record and translated over 11,000 characters in just over a week. I’m proud of the work that I did (and it was very appreciated on twitter), but boy was it a lot!
I was a little glad that lesson 38 of Minna no Nihongo was on the easier end haha because I didn’t have as much time to spend on the textbook as usual, but was still able to meet my arbitrary deadline for completing a lesson before I leveled up.
Keep in mind that it’s always possible to reset just one or two levels back, in such a situation, if it would help make coming back easier. That way, you get to be ‘reintroduced’ to the items of the level, and the second time around it is much easier than the first time, so it’s actually kind of enjoyable, IMHO.
Think of it like the first time you traveled to a city it was rushed because it was a business trip, or ‘just passing through’. But then you get a chance to revisit the city on a vacation or to visit some friends or family. You’ve ‘been there before’, but this time it’s more leisurely and you get to ‘fully experience’ it. ![]()
Level 12 got ![]()
Unfortuantely, my goal of getting to 20 before school started up was a bit of a reach. Even with going at almost full speed, it wasn’t enough. But I did get a little bit more than halfway there! I might be slowing down a little bit when school starts, but I have a really light load this year so I might not have to.
scenic route durtling extending beyond wanikani …
i’m thinking of doing (my first!) JLPT exam this december - in 3 months i’ll have been studying japanese for 2 years (!!!) so a lot of my friends/family are saying i should shoot for n3 … but i think i’d rather try for n4. i’m feeling a little bit of guilt/embarrassment for “how long i’m taking” / concerned i’m not pushing myself so i’m wondering whether they’re right and i should go for n3. but it feels wrong… idk!
i think i need to remind myself comparison is the thief of joy and it’s still worth while to try for n4 / better than doing nothing!
First-time JLPT N4 buddies! I’ve signed up for that one too. ![]()
Although I took a mock test last year when the WK forums did one on July 4, I felt like I only ギリギリ passed using the home-scoring method. So I’m hoping to pass with more confidence this December.
I recommend finding an old test and trying it out. If N4 feels too easy, now you know you can bump up.
seconded!
The most important thing to measuring progress is establishing a benchmark!
yaaay how fun to have a buddy (^▽^) ! do you have a plan for how you’re going to revise for the next few months? out of kanji, listening, reading, and grammar, where do you feel strongest/weakest? i pretty much only feel confident with kanji haha though when i’ve taken japanese tests in the past i’ve been pretty good at syntax too!
I will definitely check out the old tests you posted; thanks for sharing ![]()
がんばりましょう!
I’m still slowly working my way through N5 grammar. Not sure when to count from, as I’ve been a bit on and off or just doing a tiny bit here and there. But it’s been years, that’s for sure.
How fast you go depends on your goal. I’m learning just for the fun of it, to enjoy learning.
Zero plan, head empty, no thoughts lol ![]()
I kind of signed up on a whim because I figured sign-ups would fill up again immediately like last year. So I was surprised there were still seats available.
I also feel strongest with kanji thanks to Wanikani, but I probably need to work Burned Items into my review rotation to keep them current. The listening in the mock tests was okay. Having the pictures to reference in the test helps a lot. I think my weakest is reading because I’m slow.

If you happen to come across any burned items that feel unfamiliar and you think are shaky, consider the possibility of resurrecting them as I described in my ‘revisiting old friends’ post. Starting them back at apprentice and working them back up to re-burning them may be more efficient than working through the entire list of burned items, if you really need more reviews to refresh particular items. The second time around they are always much easier, so they don’t add nearly as much to the cognitive workload as fresh new lessons. Plus you gain a lot more confidence in them as well. Again, just an idea!
an excellent point! thanks for the reminder
Hello!
I’ve just joined the
team! But, I shall have to shamefully admit that I ended up having to reset due to life stress and trying to go a bit too fast previously. This time, I’m definitely taking it the slow route. (Average level up will be ~15 days per, I think.)
Take it nice and slow, and enjoy!
There is no shame in needing to restart.
The motto of going slow to prevent needing it doesn’t mean there is anything bad about having to.
I had to do it myself. Life made me unable to keep up reviews for several months, so I found my consistency had dropped so far I decided to reset myself.
I regret going as far as I did, I found I knew the earliest level enough to not needed. But done is done.
I’ve been more consistent this time, and making good progress at a very steady ( but slow) pace ![]()
after 23 days, made it to level 26 (not so long compared to my 118 days last level!)
however, i think i’m gonna let wanikani take a backseat for the next three months to work on my grammar (using bunpro), reading, and listening for the N4 since wkstats tells me most of the N4 kanji i’ve already burned sooooo i actually imagine i’m gonna be on level 26 for a while haha
i’ll do my reviews still but i’m in no rush to do the lessons
i’ve changed myself to a tomato durtle up above to mark this decision haha
みんなさん、おはようございます
i recently joined the durtle squad, mostly because a week ago i was extremely burnt out with lessons from previous levels, and thought this would be a way for that not to happen again ![]()

Durtle Squad members, the Durtle tour is about to begin!

Level 44!
Late to update once again, thanks to being very distracted this past week
. I spent my standard 14 days on this past level.
Some stressful stuff happening kept me from being as productive as I typically am, but I did manage to use my Japanese skill to help a friend who was searching for more information about one of her ancestors, and I also had my first conversation with someone in Japanese on twitter!
I found another fan translator who’s coming at this from the opposite direction (they’re translating All Elite Wrestling, which is in English, into Japanese, whereas I’m translating Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling from Japanese into English), and I wanted to compliment them on their work, especially their fan essays about some really complicated AEW storylines, so I decided to reach out to them with my own translation blog. It was a neat interaction! They said they looked at my TJPW blog, and I’m doing great
.
That interaction cheered me up a lot after I’d had a kind of rough week
. It’s nice to have a little affirming reminder that all of the work I’m doing is in fact worthwhile.
うわぁあぁ〜 what a fantastic interaction!
It’s awesome to hear that your work is helping you connect to other wrestling fans across the globe. Way to take the plunge and reach out! I hope you two are able to stay in touch.
Not a level up post, but I was so consumed by life stuff and depression that I fell off the boat for this month. For the first time, I’ve let my reviews really pile up a lot (I wasn’t smart and forgot about vacation mode).
I wanted to post to keep myself accountable and try to start up my WaniKani habit again! Gonna try tackling the reviews bit by bit before starting up lessons again.
