Last Minute Japanese before a trip

Hey guys,

it’s finally happening. I’m going to Japan in less than two weeks. My Japanese is still really bad, because I never practiced speaking and listening. It’s too late to completely fix this, but I was wondering if anybody knows of good resources for like “everyday” Japanese, that’s immediately useful. Like “memorize these phrases to do ok in a shop” and stuff like that. I feel like the Japanese I know is like JRPG terms

Thanks a bunch

These three words will get you through almost any social situation known to man. :slightly_smiling_face:

In all honesty, Google can supply you with all manner of “X phrases you need to know as a tourist in Japan” sites (though the higher that number, the more likely it is to include related phrases like おはよう and こんにちは and こんばんは as separate entries). Here’s one fairly good example.

You gonna regale us with tales of your adventures? :grinning:

Ok wow, this is really low level, but exactly the kind of stuff i also stumbled upon.

Maybe someone knows some secret collection of a bit more in-depth, but immediately useful, stuff.

Honestly, pretty much all of the immediately useful stuff is low-level. Unless you go out of your way to hold conversations with people, odds are the most talking you’re gonna do is with cashiers in kombini, because they’ve generally got a script - in pseudo-keigo - that they need to get through. Otherwise it’s just “this please” and “I have a reservation here” and “Ticket for Tokyo Station please” and “where is the toilet”.

You got any specific thoughts for phrases you might need, or situations you might need phrases for? We can help fill you in.

maybe learn some words or phrases that are useful when it comes to your nationality and your country
everytime i ended up in a conversation it was a “where are you from?” and when i said Germany they started with football, beer, sausages etc. etc.
or stuff about why you learn japanese what you plan during your trip etc… like small talk topics…

This hurts, because other than in the US (where everybody is so chatty) I never really engage in smalltalk, because I’m too shy  And considering that Japanese people also don’t really do that, yeah, it’ll probably only be the cashiers :frowning:
Anyway, this “walkthrough” is actually very helpful, thanks

I don’t know this one. :eyes:

I think that’s what you can see on the morning trains - everybody just どうず off into dreamland once again

だいじょうぶ is also a good one

Sure they do. いい天気ですね will work for that. So long as the weather actually is nice.

Whoops. Fixed it.

Also 結構です. I use 大丈夫です on too much of a reflex, and there were times when 結構です would have been the better choice.
