Kanji goals before grammar?

Hi, I’m new here. I’ve been studying Japanese for about a month so far and have been using WaniKani for 11 days (level 2). I’m eager to dive into learning vocab and grammar but Tofugu recommends reaching level 10 on WaniKani before proceeding to grammar. This seems a bit extreme to me, but then again, what do I know?

What is everyone’s opinion on how many Kanji to know before studying grammar? (I plan to use the Genki books for grammar but am open to recommendations as well.)

Thanks!!

You can pretty much ignore that advice in my opinion. If you’re excited to jump in to grammar, go ahead and do so! Then just keep studying kanji on the side. :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s best to learn hiragana very early, katakana soon and get a start with Kanji but beyond that, I think it’s not necessary to know a lot of kanji before studying some grammar.
Most important is keeping on keeping on!

One good resource to check out is Irodori.
It’s a free Japanese government produced course: with intro guide here:

I was doing conversations and grammar before I even heard of WK. So there’s no reason you can’t start grammar whenever you want. Actually, a bit of conversation and grammar has helped me when I learn kanji.
