Kaniwani Major Update: 1.3.4!

Amenophyckxs said... First of all, let me say that i love this site. I did not realize how bad i was at recalling words when it goes in the opposite direction. I feel my reviews on wanikani go better too after starting using kaniwani, so tl;dr great job.

I did however encounter a small annoyance and im not sure if you can address it even or if this has been posted before but i thought id let you know anyway.
Whenever im on my phone and try to do reviews (chrome for android) it starts the first letter in katakana and then continues in hiragana, due to the phone starting new sentences with a capital letter, so i either have to type the first letter twice and at the end remove the katakana or tap the shift key twice before i start typing.
I know i can turn off the option of sentences starting with a capital letter but i like it everywhere else and dont want to constantly disable/enable it.

Thanks!

Hmm, I thought we had taken care of that. I will add it to the list of things to check out.

Cheers!
 Thank you!

The long-awaited Patch 1.3

  • Adds ability to add answer synonyms. Tired of confusing 女の子 and 女子 due to the near-identical meanings? So are the developers!
See how it works here: https://gfycat.com/FatalDarkJaguar

The question mark will lead you to jisho.org if you need to lookup and copy the kanji for whatever word you’re turning into a synonym.

Please note that this does not combine words in the backend, it simply allows you to add acceptable answers to pieces of vocab.  You can also remove synonyms you have previously created by visiting the appropriate vocabulary page, and removing them.

Been looking forward to this feature, it's really appreciated!

Man, I remember it was not too long ago that KaniWani was a bare-bones no-aesthetics v1 release. It’s come a long way, and I absolutely love it! Thanks for all your hard work!

I need some more context

Tadgh, awesome stuff as always. Thanks!! KW is super useful for me since recall in the other direction is much weaker.

Hello!
I have a question about SRS system of Kaniwani:  I have gurued almost all my items, but they keep popping up with reviews as often as if they are still apprentices. Is SRS intervals different in Kaniwani  or it could be some bug?

If you give me your username I can delve into your reviews and find out for sure, but it may just be a perception thing. The Guru SRS timings are indeed correct. Can you give me your username and some vocab you are noticing this with? Feel free to email me at tadgh@cs.toronto.edu with any more details you might have.

Hi, Tadgh11!
My nickname is the same as here (nikEvklid), hmm, say words like inu, meijin, tsuki, shi(town). Though, it is my general impression, not particular words. Thank you very much for helping me!

Thank you for all the awesome effort youre putting into this!

Hi! I don’t know if it’s already been said, in Safari the page showing individual learned vocab is a bit… weird.
With that said, I absolutely love the website and it saved me from having to do a whole Anki deck for the purpose! Super kudos!

Hi!

I’ve noticed a constant bug: whenever I try to type 切迫 (せっぱく) for the entry “urgency” using a Japanese IME for the answer it comes out as せっpあく. This happens for all inputs that require the small っ. Has there been a fix for this?

Also, words like ~人 don’t work properly, since the  ~ character displays a yellow response.

Hmm, I'll check both of those out. The latter is certainly a feature I could add. The former should not be occurring. Does it work fine when NOT using a japanese IME? and just typing in the romaji?

Safari 9.0.3 on El Capitan :)

Sigh… Safari & IE have terrible bugs with a particular CSS layout property (flexbox).

I’ll do some more troubleshooting to work around their shortcomings ><

Hey Luocifer,  can you give us some more details?

I can't reproduce the problem with any of the IMEs available to me at the moment (working as intended).

1) Which specific IME are you using?
2) Are you choosing kana from a phone keypad like せ,  っ,  ぱ...  or are you entering s,e,p,p,a... on a keyboard with an IME turned on?
3) Which Operating System?
4) Which Browser?

Thanks!

Yesterday I used KW on my WP8.1 phone with the Edge browser and and noticed that the IME is ignoring the first letter. I remember that this issue was discussed somewhere. If I type “hyaku” the IME shows “やく”, for the correct “ひゃく” I need to type “hhyaku”. This happened with every word. It is manageable, but pretty annoying.

Hi,
I wonder if the SRS timing is the same as wanikani. It seems much faster to me. I gurued items within a day. And on the following day, I got to review them again. My user name is indistinguisher.
Thanks!
