Jin Sensei - Your personalized AI-powered Japanese Podcast

Heyo turtlecrabs,

There aren’t any “WaniKani for Japanese listening practice” apps. Everything I see out there is either too simple or too complicated. I want a personalized experience. Not too hard, not too easy. It should get harder as I get better.

I only became conversational in Japanese because I exposed myself to lots and lots of Japanese, even studying for 6 months in Japan and living with my in-laws. I would never have been able to become conversationally fluent, or understand what people are saying at all for that matter, without those experiences. My tools for personalized listening practice were limited. I was either bored by lessons that were too simple or completely lost and confused (I’m looking at you audio books).

With the recent advances in AI, we now have the ability to completely customize our learning experience. And it has got me thinking…

You know what would be amazing?

What if I could listen to a new Japanese podcast everyday that is personalized to my current WaniKani reviews?

That would be game changing. Exposure is a huge part of becoming fluent. I could hyper practice my reviews easily, without putting in much extra effort.

Now we can! There is a new app called Jin Sensei.

It’s not perfect, still lots to do and improve. It needs a lot of testing and feedback. But this absolutely one of the tools I wish I had learning to listen and speak Japanese.

I have been having a blast working on it and I really think it will help you in your journey to fluency.

Give it a try.

Also please give feedback in our discord. I would love to chat.

Fair Warning: Jin Sensei is a paid subscription with a 1 day free trial. I would love to offer it for free, but I am a one person team atm and the cost of using the LLM services is pretty high. I’ve already racked up bills creating this app, lol.

A question why use Wanikani level as your japanese level when it has no value for that. You can be level 60 and not pass N5. Other it looks like a good idea.

@Polygonsilikon this is good feedback. I needed a simple mechanism to quickly gauge what level you were if you signed up and didn’t have an active WaniKani account that allows you to increase the “difficulty” of the words that are included in the lesson.

Perhaps this could change somehow to be a survey or something. Or maybe it is as simple as switching to the JLPT grades. Since the lessons are passive atm, it had to be simple to start.

I can imagine a more dynamic experience where it is constantly trying to grade your level and adapt based on your interactions with the site.

Try it out though and let me know what you think! You can always cancel your sub if you don’t find it useful.
