Japanese Verb Frequency List

I didn’t really know which subcategory to put this in so I just made it general. Please forgive me. :sob:

I’m looking for some sort of frequency list but specifically with verbs?

iKnow is the closest thing I’ve found so far to what I’m looking for. But you have to sort the list the get the verbs all together (they’re at the very bottom and it’s not verb specific). It’s not bad but I wanted to see if anyone knew of, could find, or could recommend a better option?

I appreciate any help!

A quick and dirty search yielded me this:

You can pick it to display verbs and sort by frequency. Don’t know if it’s what you’re looking for, or in a format that’s useful for you, but hope it helps!

This Looks really useful.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think that some words that aren’t e.g. nouns in english/german are e.g. nouns in Japanese. Could someone have a Look at the list?

When I went to the Volkshochschulkurs there was a bit of a confusion because a Word (I think it was あと) was treated Like a noun but “after” isn’t a noun in english or German.

You could ask Chat GPT to create a frequency list for certain Word types.

後 comes from the same origin as 跡, which I imagine any language treats as a noun. It’s not unusual for words to be different parts of speech like that. I also feel like 後’s part of speech will vary based on usage.

Frequency lists are messy in all languages but especially so in Japanese due to its spelling and agglutinative nature.

There’s a dozen way to spell とる, should they be counted individually or amalgamated? What about 取り込む, is it a separate verb or just an agglutination?

So depending on what you want to do you may take different approaches that will lead to very different results.

At any rate my go-to for frequency data are the jpdb frequency lists. In my experience they are a decent representation of word frequency in fiction.

If you filter those to only keep verbs you may get usable data, maybe.
