Hi there, @anon9242278 |

Heyyyy, everyone! ![]()
Today, I have big news! A lot of good things have happened recently, so I feel very happy ![]()
But, before we start, let’s see how well I have studied in the last week
(absolutely not copying @trunklayer’s emotes here)
It appears like I didn’t do my lessons on MONDAY and THURSDAY. Very bad… this needs to be treated… WITH PUNISHMENTS! Let’s POLL about how I should be punished:
Spoiler alert: I won’t do it anyway ![]()
So, what are now the good news that I was talking about? Well, I’ve recently noticed that I am able to easily read all hiragana without any effort, which is, IMO, already a great achievment for someone who wasn’t even able to read こんにちは about 50 days ago ![]()
I’ve also noticed that I am starting to hear some words in songs that I actually understand. For example, I hear 私 and あなた pretty often, but a few days ago, when my mum was watching an anime, I could’ve sworn that I heard a 光 in the opening song… so overall, I’ve made pretty neat improvements ![]()
What about Katakana? Well… since I don’t encounter it often, I sometimes tend to confuse similar characters a bit… overall, I’m not as great there as with Hiragana, but at least I’m able to read it at all ![]()
Then, it appears like I’m almost finished with N4 grammar
Only 4 more lessons on Bunpro to go, which means only four more days. I haven’t really had more or less trouble with N4 so far than with N5, which can be seen pretty well from my accuracies (see the stats below).
I was also able to take a screenshot for the 0/0 streak challenge again and able to level up on Saturday, as usual. The next level will then be two digits
I dunno, but I feel like I could start to try reading a bit at level 10… what do you think?
Btw, for everyone intrested, I added a list of the scripts and tools that I use (for WK only).
So, time for weekly stats:
And here, I have a special chart of the distribution of my items over the SRS stages over time in a stacked diagram (thanks a lot @araigoshi for making this
):
And here some stats from Bunpro:
Aight, I think this is it for this week.
See ya soon!
Checklist for next week:
| 月 | 火 | 水 | 木 | 金 | 土 | 日 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WaniKani | |||||||
| Bunpro |
congrats! That’s such a great feeling right!
wait what? did I blink and you learned Japanese?
You’re way more than ready, jump in! What’s it gonna be?
Indeed
I think this is the first time since I’ve started my journey that I noticed significant progress!
Haha, I know, it feels like I’ve just started learning Japanese yesterday
I wanted to do N5 and N4 a little bit faster since they are the basics that I should know as soon as possible
I want to finish N4 on Wednesday next week, which also happens to be exactly one day after I start enlightening my first items ![]()
Hm, I’m not quite sure yet, there are so many options to choose from
I’ve read that I should install a browser extension to be able to quickly look up words that I don’t know yet, but I’m not sure which one I should choose
As for what I’ll read, I think I’ll try to look for some easy stuff in the book clubs ![]()
I think the hardest part will be my lack of vocab knowledge, as I only know like 700 words
But, challenges are there to be conquered ![]()
Purrecisely! ![]()
My tip, don’t think too hard about this, go to the ABBC list of previous picks and choose the one you’re most interested in, then just get started!
Decision paralysis alert!
Don’t put the cart in front of the horse. First start reading, then if you need it find a browser extension. For the ABBC everything has furigana, there will be a well populated spreadsheet and the forums week by week to see what people needed help on that will answer all your questions. No browser extension needed at first, do that later if you really need it, don’t let it slow you down now! Right now, take five minutes to choose your first Japanese book and get going ![]()
I’d recommend Yomitan, probably! Seems to be the best successor of Yomichan, and it’s free!
I’m going to give the exact opposite advice of mitrac and say install it right away! Installing Yomichan was one of the absolute best choices I made with my own Japanese studies, and it gave me a huge head start. I bugged two of my friends to install it, knowing it would help them, too, and one of my friends finally did over a month after I recommended it, and she told me she was kicking herself for not listening to me earlier, because it made Japanese way, way faster to read, and it saved her so much time and energy (which helped her read Japanese more!).
It might be a bit annoying to set it all up the first time, but once you have it, you won’t regret taking the time to install it!
lol, no disagreement there, I could have written my post better. Making a snap decision on the browser extension is clearly the best choice. I just wanted to make the point that getting stuck on a decision like which browser extension is uh… not the best use of time and was hoping that the pain of the first page would hasten the decision.
@NeoArcturus Just take fallenleaf’s recommendation and move on!
Lol, ok, Imma do that then! Thanks for all the recommendations, I really appreciate it a lot ![]()
Apart from reading, you can probably try to listen to some beginner friendly japanese podcasts too, don’t worry if you don’t understand most of the stuff yet.
Most recommended that I got from the WK forums is:
Nihongo Con Teppei
I can recommend this one too:
YUYUの日本語Podcast
Yeah, that one is great!
I recommend starting with the beginner series though ![]()
Thank you for the recommendation – I should check it! ![]()
