Japanese in one year?! - Not your usual study log

Lol    I’ve been in the POLL thread pretty much since I started with WK, though

Time for two more chapters!

セレスティナ (7 / 22)

長い緑の()(うで)()()けると、みるみるうちに怪我(けが)(なお)って()きました。

(Markus:) (ぼく)はマーカス。(きみ)は?

(Girl:) 私はセレスティーナよ。

(Markus:) (きみ)は強いんだね。森で一人何をしていたの?

(Celestina:) 薬草(やくそう)(さが)していたのよ。あなたは?

(Markus:) ルーンストーンハンティングに行くんだ。君も一緒に行こうよ。

He wrapped the long and green leaf around his arm, and in a very fast time (N3 grammar spotted!), the wound became better. (I believe the second part would be something more like “… and the wound became better very fast”, but I wanted to demonstrate my N3 skills :sunglasses: (besides, the meaning is the same lol))

(Markus:) I’m Markus. And you?

(Girl:) I’m Celestia.

(Markus:) You are strong. What were you doing in the forest alone?

(Celestina:) I was searching for medical herbs. And you?

(Markus:) I went to collect Runes. Let’s go together!

ルーンハンティング (8 / 22)

しばらく歩くと、ルーンストーンのある場所(ばしょ)()きました。

(Markus:) ルーンストーンを(さが)したことはある?

(Celestina:) ないわ…

(Markus:) (たい)らで黒い(いし)なんだ。(いわ)(あいだ)(さが)せば…

(Markus:) 見て!見つけたよ。

(Celestina:) へー、楽しそう。どっちが(おお)く見つけられるか、勝負(しょうぶ)よ!

They walked for a while and arrived at the place where the Rune stones are.

(Markus:) Have you ever searched for Rune stones?

(Celestina:) No…

(Markus:) They are flat and black stones. If you search in the space of the stones…

(Markus:) Look! I found one!

(Celestina:) Really? It looks fun! A game, in which direction you can find a lot! (Pretty sure I messed up at the last sentence )

それを()むことは(たの)しんだよ!

Deepl returns : It’s a game to see who can find more.
I reckon it’s not an easy one to parse. The first part is ‘Who can find the most ?’ and the second is : ‘it’s a match !’ It makes sense in Japanese but is hard to translate.
I think what I wanted to say is : “the one of us who finds the most wins !”

それを()むことは(たの)しんだよ!

I think your translation is correct,
it’s not one for literal translation as you say!

That’s a great one to know, I see it everywhere since i learned it. It’s used a lot for binary win/ lose challenges.

As always, thanks a lot for your corrections! So, どっち can also mean “which one” and “who”? Good to know, thanks!

It’s actually a good exercise for me to look up the grammar points I do not master 100% and tanslate the hardest bits of ‘my’ work.

Speaking of it, how good, would you say, are you at Japanese? I guess since you wrote the TWC, you’re at least about N3, right?

I’d say I was somewhere between N3 and N2 with my vocab being much better than my grammar.
Nowadays I barely study anymore but I still enjoy writing stories and checking your translations.
I know one day I’ll go back at it but I started 6 years ago or so and my interests have changed since then.

To write the Tile World Chroncles I actually use Deepl. I try different input until the output is simple enough and then I pay a free lancer to polish it. So I’m definitely cheating all along lol.

DrDru, that’s my output level right now, too (after 5 years). I think that I may pass N3 this year (but it will be difficult for me).
I try to say what I want to say in Japanese
but then I have to double check it (for example if I’m “publishing” here or on Hello Talk), or people point out all kinds of mistakes.

These days, I’m trying not to “check” in a translator as much as possible and just say it… So I’m learning more about my mistakes.
@trunklayer さん is a careful reader, and always very kind when they tell me about my mistakes.
(That kindness is making me braver, thank you Trunkie! :pray:t6: :pray:t6:)

And I enjoy reading your stories  They’re really great, especially for beginners like me!

Lol  DeepL is the best translator, though!

When I try to write Japanese, I mostly only use grammar and vocab I feel comfortable with, which limits me a lot in my ablilty to express myself lol (I should definitely change that)

Time for another two chapters! Today not too much commentary bc I’m a bit exhausted from two to three hours of walking and shopping  (I get exhausted rather quickly when it comes to physical activities haha)

ルーンハンティング (9 / 22)

その()午後(ごご)はルーンストーンをずっと(さが)していました。 セレスティーナはハンティングが得意(とくい)なことがわかりました。

(Celestina:) また見つけた!

(Markus:) へぇ。(ぼく)よりたくさん見つけたね。もう(おそ)いから、そろそろ帰ろう。

(Celestina:) 家に来て。一緒に夕食(ゆうしょく)を食べましょう。

(Markus:) いいね。

They were searching for Rune Stones continousely in the evening of this day. Celestina discovered that hunting is satisfying.

(Celestina:) I found one again!

(Markus:) Really? You found a lot more than me! Since it’s already late, let’s go back soon.

(Celestina:) Please come to my house! Let’s eat dinner together!

(Markus:) That sounds good!

セレスティーナの家 (10 / 22)

セレスティーナの家は、近くのディドゥー村の川沿(かわぞ)いにありました 。草花(くさばな)(かこ)まれた(しず)かな場所(ばしょ)です。

(Celestina:) そこが私の住んでいるところよ。

(Markus:) 素敵(すてき)だね。

(Celestina:) そうね。私、ここが好きなの。静かだし、村の人たちもいい人たちばかりだしね。

(Celestina:) 入って。

Celestina’s hause was along the river near the village Didwu. It was a quiet place that was surrounded by flowers.

(Celestina:) There is my place where I am living.

(Markus:) It’s lovely!

(Celestina:) Yeah. I like it here! It is quiet, and the people from the village are also nice people.

(Celestina:) Come in!

Hello!

Another week has passed! This week, I have quite a few things to announce (why do I feel like I say this every single week :joy:)

First of all, I planned to implement production of Japanese text into my study routine and call it production! Since I don’t practice speaking yet, it’s important that I still somehow practice production, and since I enjoy it a lot to write in Japanese, that would be the perfect addition to my study routine! 書くことは楽しみです!

Then, I also finished learning how to handwrite Hiragana! Yes, I’m kinda slow here, but I’ll start with kanji today and learn Katakana somewhere inbetween. My worst looking Hiragana characters are currently つ, て and ゑ.

Alright, time for some news progresswise: First of all, I leveled up on WaniKani, of course! According to the total progress bar, I’ve seen about 25% of WK now, which is kinda unbelievable to me! A few months ago, I couldn’t even read こんにちは, so my progress really blows my mind! :eyes:

Then, since I also got Bunpro, I have some progress as well! I’ll finish the second lessons and thus 20% in total of N3 grammar there. If I continue at that pace, I’ll be done with N1 grammar at some point during summer :joy: I am also working on finishing the N5 vocab deck, and I believe I’ll be done next week or the week after that, let’s see!

Regarding KaniWani, it was very boring, barely got any new lessons, and review wise, I had like 30 per day :joy:

I didn’t do too much listening practice this week, unfortunately. And also reading wise, I could’ve done a bit more, but at least I did the bare minimum. @araigoshi said that I should try to start with immersion, and while I’m not sure if I’m already ready for that (I still have a huge lack vocab wise), Imma just jump into the cold water and start to read a manga!

Now, something else that is kinda Japanese related: When I looked at my Yu-Gi-Oh cards yesterday, I realized that the symbols in the top right corner are KANJI, and that I CAN READ THEM! (mostly)

This is so cool!

The slower pacing for N3 grammar really helps, as you can see from the stats :eyes:

Have a nice day, and see ya later when I translate the next two chapters from Markus’ Ascend!

Glad you liked it! I have about 2000 cards (duplicats are included), but I just wanted to give an example for every kanji. It’s so awesome to look at it and to be able to recognize it!

I’ve taught my kids the mnemonic for “class”
じゅぎょう where one probably shouldn’t play Yu-gi-Oh!

Just found a video of me playing piano (it’s actually a 61-keys keyboard and it has no sustain pedal, but Imma call it piano anyway :stuck_out_tongue:) and thought I might share it.

Sorry for the weird format, but I had to cut my face out lol

I recorded that in October for school and forgot about it. While it’s quite a decent performance (apart from the fact that sustain is activated during the entire song haha), there are some flaws. Also, in some parts, my fingers are way more flat than I’d like them to be…

It’s Rousseau’s arrangement of Vivaldi’s Winter from the four seasons. Surprisingly, the piece wasn’t that hard for me, I made this 3 - 4 weeks after initially beginning to learn the piece.

EDIT: Made it a YouTube, there you go! (Thanks to @Dunkelfuchs for the suggestion!)

Alright, time for two more chapter from the TWC!

夕食 (11 / 22)

おいしい夕食(ゆうしょく)の後、セレスティーナが薬草(やくそう)から作ったお茶を出してくれました。

(Celestina:) あなたはルーンクラフターなのね。

(Markus:) そうだよ、ずっと勉強してたんだ。

(Celestina:) (めずら)しいわね。いつか見せてくれる?

(Markus:) もちろん、来週ロックタウンで会おう。

(Celestina:) やった。そうしましょう。

After a delicious dinner, Celestina served a tea that was made from medical herbs.

(Celestina:) You are a Rune crafter, isn’t it?

(Markus:) That’s right, I was studying continously.

(Celestina:) This is unusual. Can you show it me some day?

(Markus:) Of course, let’s meet next week in Rock Town!

(Celestina:) Yay! Let’s do this!

ロックタウン村で (12 / 22)

マーカスは宿(やど)の前でセレスティーナを待っていました。

(Markus:) セレスティーナ、こんにちは。来てくれて本当にうれしいよ。

(Celestina:) こんにちは、元気だった?

(Markus:) 元気だったよ。(きみ)にプレゼントがあるんだ。

(Celestina:) わぁ、ブレスレット?きれい!

Markus was waiting for Celestina in front of the inn.

(Markus:) Hello, Celestina! I’m really happy that you came for it!

(Celestina:) Hello, how are you?

(Markus:) I’m great! Here is a present for you!

(Celestina:) Wow, a bracelet? It’s wonderful!

Thanks a lot! Happy you like it  I personally wouldn’t call myself a master, though, more like decent
I’ve been playing for four years now, although I had two one-year long breaks in these four years.

Btw, it’s really cool that this word

appeared in the TWC today!
