Japanese Film Festival Online/JFF Theater 2024

My wife told me this as I watched saying there is a reason for the main character’s behavior. Did you already see TV series before you saw this movie? Honestly, I’m having a hard time getting through this movie with the comedy style and I’m pretty selective with my Japanese food-porn in fiction for some reason. I just watched half last night. I do like Ichihara Hayato, The Honest Realtor was funny, but his pronunciation I find harder than most. At least JFF has JP subtitles this year, they only thing I enjoyed thus far :unamused:

Did anyone like Kiba? Late to the fest and won’t get through them all.

No. Can’t seem to find anywhere to watch it either, though I confess I didn’t put a huge amount of effort into it.

Watched the four short horror films!

The Invitation

Liked this one the most. Although there were so many absurd things about it. Number one rule: don’t split up! Why not wait for backup (they took so long though). And why did the officer stay crawling on the floor the whole time, she had so long to get up and run  survival skills are zero in this film

Karakasa

Interesting premise, and I liked the cinematography. Not bad. The sudden cut-off mid scream at the end made me laugh though.
Takeaway: stop taking random umbrellas?

Closet

Felt like something made by a film student. Kinda meh.

Best Wishes To All

Interesting I guess. Don’t really know what to say about it. I liked the way the grandma stood in the corridor silently and then started banging her head on the door, and also the man crawling in. Those two scenes did a pretty good job at being unnerving :+1:

I suppose this is my introduction to horror! I’ve only watched silly ones like Scream with friends before, but that doesn’t really count.

Going to watch BL metamorphosis now!

Yeah I tried that. The thing is any browser works for films I open the first time. The problem is just with three where I pushed play already last week and just watched the opening, they won’t load anymore. I’ll just use a different device then… maybe a caution for anyone, if you’re on android and push play make sure you mean it!

I know but I’m pretending that it doesn’t exist, would love to get back to my usual reads now :x

Then you probably don’t want to hear that my Japanese friend and her dad totally loved Downtown Rocket :face_with_hand_over_mouth: oops I said it. And that it’s a great window to the Japanese every day experience :face_with_peeking_eye: sorry

Finished BL Metamorphosis! Very light and sweet. I don’t have any particularly strong feelings about it.

Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be bothering to watch anything from that either. I like movies (and this year’s selection is quite good) but don’t care much for drama series.

I watched The Lines that Define Me!

This is definitely not the type of movie that I’d normally choose to watch, but it was a pretty well done movie and I thought the topic of sumi-e was interesting. Just not really my genre. I think I’d actually prefer to read the manga version of this story for some reason

Also, now I want to go to one of those sumi-e demonstrations. Looks fun!!

Next I want to watch Wedding High because you all are making me curious. Not sure how many more movies I’ll fit in.

Just finished Wedding High
gotta say that trailer was underwhelming for how fun that movie was.

But glad to go in with low expectations
fun movie - worth a watch for sure

That’s why I don’t watch trailers. :sunglasses:

I also don’t read synopses but…

but then how was I supposed to choose
I only passed on 5 movies (would have been 6 if it weren’t for Wedding High)

but now this means I need to play catch up with all the reading and bookclubs

I saw “The Lines that Define me” at the cinema during last year’s Japanese film festival and really enjoyed it. Also thought the same thing - would love to go to one of those demonstrations.

There’s a Japan Fair in Seattle every summer, and last year they had a sumi-e presentation. I didn’t see it though, so I don’t know exactly what it included. I hope they’ll have a demonstration this year.

I’m definitely gonna go this year! Just waiting for them to release the schedule so I can decide which day I want to go

Watched The Zen Diary. Pretty boring. On the plus side, I’m ready for bed now :sleepy:

I’m definitely looking forward to it. However… I’m bracing for later disappointment as it seems it has a second season too (from 2018) and that one ain’t included at the JFF. It doesn’t seem to be available for streaming, at least not in my country (and this VPN thing is too annoying).

I never watch trailers either, for any film/TV show not just Japanese ones.
I just read the description on IMDb and take a look at the rating there.
Although the latter is just “informative” - there are plenty of 6-ish scores which I’ve found to be much better films, and a then a lot of 7-8-something that I couldn’t even finish

Speaking of which, the blessing and the boon of IMDb are the listings under “More Like This”. A couple of hops from the films in this year’s JFF selection led me to discover a few other very, very good ones… ended up not watching as many from JFF as I had planned but through those IMDb recommendations this week has been really good in terms of Japanese films for me

Just finished “I am what I am” and really enjoyed it. Had to make myself finish “Twenty-four Eyes” last night though - it wasn’t that the subject matter wasn’t interesting but there were way, way too many songs. Couldn’t help thinking some serious editing would have improved the experience.

Don’t know if I have any time now to squeeze in any more films but I’ve certainly enjoyed the festival.
