I was thinking last night, I think I’m going to love it forever! I’m enjoying my new watch but it’s not the same, I miss the characters! Will have to watch again soon!
Thanks so much - I’ve added Hana Kimi to the watch list and will look up the others soon
Two more I’ve watched over the past year on Netflix that were very good, but not quite what OP is after.
Sanctuary サンクチュアリ-聖域 is a drama about a young thug who gets persuaded to join a sumo stable. The acting is fantastic, but it does deal with some really heavy themes and is generally quite brutal and violent. It was hard to watch at times; there’s lots of bullying, but the overall story was fantastic and the character development is great.
Extremely Inappropriate! 不適切にもほどがある! is much more light-hearted but still deals with some interesting themes such as sexism, working mothers, political correctness and harassment in the workplace, how internet drama can get blown up by people who weren’t involved with the initial incident etc.
It’s a time travel drama about a PE teacher from the late Showa (1980s) who travels forwards to current day Japan, and the subsequent clash of ideals between Showa and Reiwa. The comedy is great, you really root for all of the characters, and the ultimate message is one of tolerance and acceptance.
Don’t miss the follow-up movie that came afterward. And there is also a ‘Season 2’ (not to be mixed up with the season 2 you are watching now) that came out in 2018. I won’t spoil the plot other than to say that it’s the same school and universe but a later generation with a few familiar faces.
Oh and seeing as though you’re all so knowledgeable, does anyone know - this is super niche! - of any Japanese films/documentaries about climbing?! Indoor or outdoor, either is fine. My husband is into climbing and that’s one way I can get him to watch something with me in Japanese!
いわかける! -Climbing Girls- is an anime that came out a few years ago, though I didn’t get around to watching past the first episode, so I don’t know how good it is on the whole. Plenty of fanservice for the hubby, though.
I love Hana Yori Dango. (The Korean version is so much crueler!) I saw someone mentioned Mischievous Kiss, and I didn’t mind that, but it made me sad that the guy was so mean for so long. There’s a series called Good Morning Call that I loved, which has a similar plot, but I liked the guy better.
I also recently watched Eye Love You, which is Japanese, but it has a Korean lead - so it’s a mixture of Japanese and Korean. It’s very sweet and cheesy. And if you don’t mind a bit of reality TV, Love Like a K-Drama was interesting because it has Japanese actresses that go to Korea and work in staged K-drama scenes with male Korean actors in an attempt to fall in love. I liked seeing how they communicated with the language barrier.
And when I first started looking for Japanese stuff that wasn’t anime, I found Terrace House (which you may have already heard of). It’s like Big Brother, but it’s so calming to watch, and the celebrity panel was quite funny.
I just saw that “My second Aoharu” is now on viki. that was also a cute and funny rom com kind of drama.
i think from last year… (or maybe this year , lately i’m too confused what happened when… the time is running too fast.)
