I’m watching Hana Yori Dango 2 (with English subtitles) and I’m gutted I’m nearly finished! Even though it’s well old, cheesy, and a bit ridiculous in places, I have loved it. Dommmmmyooooooojiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!
Anyhoo, any recommendations for what I can watch to follow that?
I may be 48 but I love cheesy, teen, romance, anything like that!
I’ve no idea myself but I’m barging in here 'cause I’m very curious what others will suggest
(hope they’ll be given with English title translations too, makes it easier to look up on IMDb)
As an aside:
I could always recommend a bunch of non-teen, non-light (well, not necessarily) Japanese drama feature films… which is what I’m having fun with nowadays
My recommendation is My love mix-up.
It is a very funny love triangle but turns out its not and and not a triangle at all and it was a misunderstanding and one of the ikemen likes another ikemen who liked the girl, the girl likes the ikemen who liked the ikemen.
I can’t explain just give it 1 episode, it always makes me grin.
We recently finished an incredibly cheesy one that I call “Terrible Hospital” but I believe its actual name is An Incurable Case of Love/恋はつづくよどこまでも. It’s based on a manga and is about a girl who witnesses someone having a heart attack when she’s in her final year of school, and being rescued by a passing doctor. She obsesses over him for 5 years and then finally graduates as a nurse and starts working at his hospital, where she immediately confesses her love to him and it met with complete bafflement and hostility.
I call it Terrible Hospital because the staff always have loads of free time and are generally not great at either their jobs or confidentiality.
The main actress in it is currently performing on London’s west end as Chihiro in Spirited Away and I keep hoping I’ll run into her somewhere
The Great Passage / 舟を編む
It’s about the making of a dictionary, but also about finding love - really sweet and who would’ve thought the amount of work goes into putting together a dictionary?!?
Also, an anime series was made in 2016, haven’t watched that… yet.
Like Father, Like Son / そして父になる
A family finds out that their 6yo son was accidentally (or not quite) switched at birth with another. The hospital staff arrange a meeting with the other family and suggest that they exchange kids, so that everyone gets their biological children.
It’s got serious food for thought, and I’m not even a parent… wouldn’t have wanted to be in those shoes…
The Ravine of Goodbye / さよなら渓谷
When a child is murdered, there are suspicions that the single mother was having an affair with a neighbour. A journalist decides to investigate, and the story goes completely in another direction.
This one’s about shame and guilt, a victim becoming the victimizer in turn. It’s not the easiest of watches, but the story is interesting and the acting is good. I certainly rate it considerably above that IMDb score.
Loved Maki Yoko both in this one and the one above. Now that’s someone I’d like to run into on the street
If you’ll watch and enjoy any of these, lemme know and I’ll suggest more.
The live action からかい上手の高木さん (Teasing Master Takagi-san) just finished broadcasting, and is streaming on Netflix outside of Japan (with both English and Japanese subtitles available!). It’s worth watching even if you’ve already read the manga or seen the anime; it keeps the main characters basically the same but tells a somewhat different story.
Note, this is a show about middle-school students, so it’s more of a childhood crush than a full-blown romance. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie, which revisits the characters as adults.
Actually, I saw Turn to me Mukai kun (こっち向いてよ向井くん) a few months ago and I loved it !
It’s the story of an employee who’s looking for a relationship. It’s like a quest where he will learn that there are a lot of forms of love and that everyone doesn’t want the same thing than him. It’s funny, touching and it made me think a lot about what is love.
It’s on Netflix (in my country at least^^).
Omg I will always have such a soft spot for Hana Yori Dango after watching it in elementary school. I struggle with finding jdramas I enjoy and tend to watch more kdramas, but I’m always on the hunt for more jdramas since I can actually kind of watch those without subtitled. Here are some recs kind of ordered from most cheesy to most serious.
For more old shoujo romance, Hana Kimi is good (and stars Shun Oguri).
Also haven’t watched this, but I saw Netflix recently released a new version of Kimi ni Todoke, which I’ve heard good things about. it’s also based on a shoujo manga and the relationship is a lot healthier than Makino/Domyoji haha (although that toxic pair will always be my favorite).
First Love is a lot newer (2022) and has really good acting for the most part. It’s more of a serious drama, but it was so good and I’d highly recommend (apart from the last ep haha).
The two leads dated when they were younger, but then something made the FL lose her memory and the drama flashes between their past relationship and the current timeskip.
Cursed in Love is another newer romantic drama. It has a mystery element, and a lot of it centers around a wagashi shop, which I found to be a fun and interesting setting. The two leads are childhood first loves, but were separated because the FL’s mom was accused of murdering the ML’s dad, and most of the drama takes place after a 15 year time skip.
Million Yen Women isn’t really a romance, but more of a thriller. It’s about a novelist who lives with 5 women who pay a million yen in rent. His dad is on death row for murder and creepy things ensue. There are a couple cringey parts, but I enjoyed it overall. It’s also a mini series so super bingeable.
for the last two days I forgot go give my input (when I was younger i made a whole list, but i forgot to check it) so here at the top of my head. some might already be mentioned,
hana kimi (the Oguri Shun version)
Gokusen (all seasons, because of various reasons including Matusmoto Jun (seriously they should have stayed with the original storyline regarding Yankumi and his character) and Miura Haruma )
My Love Mix Up
Nobuta wo produce
Yamada taro monogatari
yasuko to kenji
Silent (not really teen, but i guess romance and pretty good)
ouran high school host club (funny, but the anime is better)
Yamato nadeshiko shichi henge (so funny )
suki na hito ga iru koto (i guess it was the first yamazaki Kento where i was like: “i like that kid”)
itazura na kiss
My Beautiful Man
I’ll edit once I remember more
some honorable mentions (which are not really romance or teen, but really good)
