Issue with 大仏

I typed in “Great Buddha” because I remembered seeing it in the example sentence

But that was marked wrong as it’s not one of the listed Meanings

Why would “Great Buddha” be used in the example sentence as the meaning of the phrase if it is not an applicable answer?

When you translate you don’t just use dictionary definitions plus there’s a bit of context with the place being Nara (implying a Giant Buddha Statue).

I think it is a valid translation and you could add it as a synonym if you want, as long as you understand that a “Great Buddha” is a big statue.

If you often type this is the translation, you can make it a user synonym. That way, your answer will be correct during reviews.

Happens all the time. You get an example with a meaning, which doesn’t count as a correct answer.

I did not know that, thanks.

How do you “make it” a synonym?

“Big Buddha” is what I usually hear from foreigners, but it’s not a correct answer. I’ve been to the daibutsu in Kamakura and Aomori, but have never heard anyone calling it the “Large Buddha.”

“Big Buddha” should definitely be an answer.

If you go to the vocab page, you should see an “add synonym” button near the definitions at the top of the page. Also during lessons and reviews it should be there near the definitions.

Oh! I never noticed that.

Thanks!

Hey @Mods it seems like “Great Buddha” should probably be added as a synonym for 大仏(だいぶつ) especially since it seems to be the official name given for that particular one by Todaiji on their website? TOP Page - 東大寺

Good point, y’all! We’ll look into adding this one :ok_hand:
