Yeah, every sensitivity is different and I admit mine is pretty low for this type of humor (I’ve seen too much of it in real life, I guess ), so I’ll be back for the next vote and hopefully the next VN of the club ^^
I think I’m almost done with the prologue (just one choice left before I get to save slot 4). I really enjoy it so far! I have to admit that I use Google translate a lot. This is way above my level! But who cares. Reading one line, looking up every word and then checking my understanding against Google translate is fun.
Those of you who have read a lot of visual novels before, which extensions do you use with Textractor? I just use Copy to clipboard (and use that with the Texthooker page plus Rikaikun) and Google translate. Are there any other extensions and/or tools that I should know about?
Do it
That’s how I started and it was awesome to just enjoy playing. Now in today’s session I noticed that sometimes I go 2, 3, sometimes even 4 sentences in a row without looking anything up or pasting it to Google Translate / DeepL! Wooow! So it will happen eventually if you stick to it
These are the extensions I use but they’re almost all just “clean up” stuff to get rid of any extra junk that appears in the text
Some of them like Regex doesn’t have a use for this VN but I’ve used it in other ones to get rid of weird characters that appear in the hook. Replacer is there to get rid of the names at the start of every sentence copying over to my text page.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying reading the VN so far too!
I’m a bit confused that y’all seem to have to use an additional tool for translations. My version of Textractor does that on it’s own, and the quality of the translations seems pretty decent.
I personally only use Textractor to grab the text; I don’t actually use its translation feature at all.
Instead, I use a parsing/dictionary tool that’s similar to rikaikun. It automatically reads your clipboard from Textractor so you don’t need to paste it into another site. This way, I can see readings and definitions without relying on MTL (though you can turn on TLs). There are a couple of these tools out there, but I can’t really recommend the exact one I’m using (Chiitrans Lite) because it triggered my virus blocker upon download but was easily quarantined
You can overlay it on top of the game, but I personally keep it at the very edge of my screen, away from the game and with small font, so that I only reference it if needed.
This is my usual setup: Game (yeeah ultrawide ain’t pretty for most games), my parser tool at the very corner of my screen, then a second monitor with Texthooker (to check on progress and quickly reference past lines) and the walkthrough. I use jisho/google as needed if I need to look up an obscure term or phrase. Lastly, I have DeepL installed to use for rare occasions only, like if I want to double check that I understood all the science talk correctly, I’ll just activate the tool with a shortcut (Ctrl+C x 2) and skim through quickly to make sure my understanding is correct.
I personally prefer to NOT see a translated version of every sentence, I only check the translation if I can’t figure it out. But I do use Yomichan a lot so I need the text to be in a browser for that.
In the end, I don’t think I really liked this route too much. The whole romance thing with Karen, I just never really felt that vibe and the route didn’t do much for me to help with that. The humor also started to get weird again near the end. It also felt like the game was setting up for something big but nothing came of it. All the time travel talk, genetics etc didn’t play a role here. I am guessing all of that will be important in the final route but would have been nice if some of it came into play here.
Also, some of those NVL scenes didn’t make much sense to me. There was talk of a revolution, Setsuna waiting for thousands of years for Karen and other stuff like that. Can’t tell if all of those scenes are hyperbole or more set up for something later. Its another one of those things that I am guessing will make sense by the final route
It was a bit weird they had the “fake” ending twice in this route. Having the credits roll the first time seemed unnecessary when they did it again later with an epilogue after the 2nd credit roll.
Haha I knew you were going to be disappointed here
I agree that’s a bit funny how he goes from “I have only one purpose, I’m from the future and there’s someone I need to save” to “Nevermind I like this girl I can just be her boyfriend”.
Things I did like about this route: I totally thought there was going to be a part where they come on the station and explore it and find something there. Took me by surprise big time when it just vanished. Also I didn’t see coming the explanation about the mom and the professor and found it interesting (at the beginning I was even very confused by the new girl and thought maybe it’s their secret daughter? but the age doesn’t add up at all). So all in all I enjoyed it OK, but still MANY unanswered questions that I hoped are answered in the other routes.
Thoughts on names in ISLAND (minor Karen route spoiler)
I think there are a lot of interesting hidden with the names in this VN, and due to not being a native, I’m probably missing plenty. But here are some I did catch.
It hit me when I re-read the prologue for the second time.
Before we even arrive on the beach, one sentence is:
時間は刹那しか残されていないというのに。
Another one:
この無限に続く輪廻の輪から、抜け出してもいいのか?
Thinking that it can’t be a coincidence that words pronounced せつな and りんね are used so early on.
When the legend of the Island is told to Setsuna, Sara says this sentence that explains the two names:
「――これは、輪廻の運命を背負った少女と、彼女と再び巡り会うために刹那の時を生き続けることを選択した青年のお話なんです」
Another interesting thing is the legend of 浦島太郎.
The Island is called 浦島 (revealed early in the prologue by 凛音 not long after we meet her).
The first name of the kind policeman that appears in one of the first scene is 太郎 (revealed in Karen’s route).
The place where they can eat sweets is called 『竜宮』 like the Palace of the Dragon King (竜宮城).
This was a rough week for me since I’ve been so sleepy lately, maybe due to work, so it was hard to stay awake while playing each night even though I found the story interesting but I wanted to finish up the Prologue and I’m glad I finally did! I finished reading everyone’s Prologue thoughts too
Random things I jotted down XD
沙羅えもんwwwww The image brought a smile to my face
There’s a “Morris” 森須 and a “Harris”? I wonder if they’re brothers XD
「――これは、輪廻の運命を背負った少女と、彼女と再び巡り会うために刹那の時を生き続けることを選択した青年のお話なんです」- I was waiting for them to reference the meaning of their names like this XD
I installed Island on the least ancient one of my old computers at my parents’ place and read the first 2 scenes of Route A (including the super long one).
Reaction pic of the week:
So far, pleasantly surprised that this route is not just lewd jokes, but jumps straight into the action. Shame we didn’t get to see more than a glimpse of the underwater buildings and the sea station.
Yeah, this jumped out at my right at the beginning, when I read the meanings of those names from the JPDB vocab list.
Funny timing, I’m currently reading Scene 3 of Route A and 守継 (Karen’s father) gets mentioned every other sentence and his name sure fits this pattern.
Haha I forgot about that scene and thought that you were posting to say that the game was not working properly at your parents’, it’s upside down (PS: can you put the last part of the sentence in spoiler tags?)
Ugh, sorry. It had spoiler tags, and they were working fine in the preview but not the actual post. I worked around it by blurring only the text and excluding the picture.
I’m almost at the end of the prologue, just one or two choices left. How do you know that you have finished the prologue and have to choose route A,B or C? Is it obvious in the game? Or do you just start one route without really realizing it?
If you haven’t read any of the guides, it’s possible to choose a route without realizing it. In that case, you’ll notice the next time you look at the flow chart. It’s not a problem, though, because you can just go back to the last junction.
Yeah DeepL / GoogleTranslate always translates it to Natsuren
Jotoba only list Karen for 夏連 though
Like Boodil says the transition is seamless but you can see in the flowchart where you are (and from your save name too, it’s the name of the scene you are in, which you can also find in the flowchart)
Good job on finishing the prologue!
