Is it too early to start? A 2026 Study Log

To give some background about myself:

I’ve been a long time lurker, dabbling and putzing around with WaniKani for a few years now. I’ve reset a few times, always promising myself that “This year will be the year that I finally try to maintain a streak and go the distance to level 60!”. Needless to say, as per my level 13 badge, that endeavor has not been entirely successful.

This last year, after having been living in Japan for the last 6 or so years, I barely, yet finally, passed N2. While I believe language learning is a lifelong journey, at some point I do want N1 as well. So, I figured the best way to achieve N1, and a better understanding of Japanese, was to start over. From the very beginning. I hope that by routinely posting a study log, I actually keep up with my studies, and who knows, maybe even hit level 60 within the next year or so!

For those who are interested, I’ll also be starting a game localization blog sometime in spring, comparing Japanese to English translations of titles I’m playing at the moment. If you’re interested or have some recommendations of games to check out, I’d be more than happy to hear them!

If you have any study recommendations as well, I’d love the advice as well!

So here it goes. Day 1:

Post study thoughts:

In regards to my online learning, I’m wondering if I should bump up how many words and kanji I get in a day. Radical names on WaniKani might trip me up a bit from time to time, but I do really appreciate their new pictures associated with them.

Thanks! Out of curiosity, how do you get a “Bookworm Durtle” badge on here? Is it something connected with the reading events?

Good luck on this run

I’m curious. How’s been life in Japan?

Thanks!

Japan has been absolutely phenomenal, but not without it’s ups and downs. There’s definitely a difference between visiting and living here. I moved to Kyushu in the summer of 2019, and then COVID happened, so it was a fairly isolating experience. Luckily, a lot of my coworkers and neighbors at the time were super supportive which was enough to convince me to stay after my time was up on the JET Program. The rose colored glasses definitely come off after the first couple years or so, but I still wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I’ll see if I can’t post some of my daily or weekly things about living here in addition to my study logs if people are interested!

People got them for participating in one of the quarterly readathons!

I think Tai the organiser said that there were plans for more durtles to be given out for the readathon this time, so if you’re interested, come and join us for as little or as much as you can at some point over that weekend!

Thanks for the heads up! I’m not sure I’ll be able to catch this winter readathon since I’ll flying back to the States to visit family and I think we’re supposed to have a Christmas party that day, but I’m definitely interested in taking part in the future! I’ll have to stock up on manga and novels in the meantime :slightly_smiling_face:

Day 2:

Somehow managed to squeeze in getting my Bunpro and WaniKani done for today, but I’m not sure much else studying is going to happen. Does working at a Japanese company count as studying if you just sit at a desk all day?

Planning on trying to get some reading and writing done this weekend

Welcome!
Sounds like you would fit right with us here, and also maybe in particular in this thread: Video Game Thread (What are you playing?)
It’s quite active (though not hyper active), people are discussing what they are playing, in English or in Japanese or in both  we love localization stories!

Day 3

I finally got through to the first set of kanji on WaniKani so hopefully from here on out the reviews start pouring in. I got my homework done for my Japanese class that’s coming up next Tuesday. Finished up a few of my Bunpro reviews (some of the practice sentences feel fairly challenging or out of my comfort zone). Now back to BG3

It’s day 4

I got my Bunpro and WaniKani done for the day, but I’m not really sure how much I retained on Bunpro. Hopefully I’ll have a little more energy and can hit the books a little bit harder tomorrow.

Day 5

After a long week, we’re so back. I did a double day of WaniKani and Bunpro (once in the morning and once in the evening). Do people find Bunpro’s sentences to be fairly challenging? I feel like in general Japanese people don’t necessarily talk the way the sentences are written if that makes sense. I also managed to get in a little reading today. I’ll list the words I didn’t recognize below. Here’s to better days of studying!

交際:こうさい:in a relationship; dating

察する:さっする:to guess

勘違い:かんちがい:misunderstanding; guess wrong

詰問:きつもん:demand an explanation

吊るされた:つるされた:hanging

染まる:そまる:to dye

I really enjoyed this way of studying vocab in context. I blurred out the English so hopefully I can study from this post later on. Hope y’all had a good day studying too!

Day 6:

I spent most of the day either teaching or getting packed up for a trip. I managed to squeeze in my WaniKani and Bunpro for the day at least, and leveled up in WaniKani :call_me_hand:

Day 7:

I’m working a 12 hour shift today, but managed to get my Bunpro and WaniKani done while I was on my breaks. I probably won’t get any reading in today as I have a little extra homework to get done before my class tomorrow.

WK: 25 lessons, 100 reviews

Bunpro: 27 lessons, 162 reviews

Does anyone know how time zone changes affect WaniKani and Bunpro streaks? I’m supposed to be on an airplane for 13 hours in a couple days and don’t want to mess up my streak (even if it’s only a week)

Day 8

It’s my last working day of the year! Which hopefully means a lot more days of studying coming up! Today I just took it easy and got my Bunpro and WaniKani done again for the day. Do any of you guys have plans for the winter holidays? How do you stay motivated to study during them?

How did you stay after JET? Are you teaching here? My contract finishes mid 2027 so I want to start to look for something next year in anticipation of this.
