[iOS & Android] - Gakugame (formerly Relay Cards) native app with multiple choice, daily review batches

I believe I’ve solved the issues and implemented the suggestions mentioned @curiousjp @Oreste @Meeks33

  • advanced lesson mode with picker and “batch please” with interleave option
  • visual cue for reading / meaning = black / white
  • switch between english and japanese keyboards (if you have it on your system) between meanings and readings
  • fix for lesson presentation ordering bug (it was an android only bug)
  • cross link explanations, tap on references and jump to other items

also some other features and bug fixes.

  • adjust multiple choice per reading or meaning, (instead of all or nothing); also add multiple choice fallback on retry
  • better multiple choice suggestions so its not obvious which is the correct answer

You can try it now on Test Flight for Apple devices Join the Gakugame - WaniKani Companion beta - TestFlight - Apple and it should be on the app store in a few days after I verify some stuff. Android will take a bit longer I’m still finalizing and need to test a bit more.

I don’t know if it’s me (or I am missing something):

when doing multi-choice revisions, when I select the correct kana reading - should it or shouldn’t it - auto play the reading?

I was going through the settings to see if I could get it to auto play, but getting an error - see pic.

“Failed to update: HTTP error: 422”

If anyone can show me how to auto play the kana readings (after correctly picking the right option), it would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks!

Ah! this is a current limitation with the app. I can read (can’t toggle them from the app, read only, that’s a limitation with WaniKani API) those auto play settings, but it doesn’t do anything with them. I forget why I didn’t wire up the actual audio… it should be possible. Let me revisit and get back to you. 1.1.4 is on its way through app review, I will tackle this in 1.1.5

Thank you so much!

Just curious, when you download a cache for offline learning, revision, etc.

Would it be hard to download the associated audio as well?

hmm, good question, let me see

OK 1.1.5 is inbound for all Apple and Android platforms and addresses all of these, you have working auto play audio and it works offline, cached with the other offline stuff.
This release also enhances some of the features from 1.1.4 and brings some other enhancements I observed from Tsurukame and just using the WaniKani web app again.

  • New lesson experience: swipeable pages with auto-play audio, batched lessons
  • “Visually Similar” and “Used In” sections in subject details and lesson explanations
  • Autoplay audio during lessons, reviews, and extra study (respects WaniKani preference, available offline)
  • Cross-linked mnemonics in lessons — untagged subject references are auto-linked
  • Full localization: Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese (if you’re that person who wants to learn Japanese with English mnemonics but have the system in another language)
  • Performance improvements and bug fixes across all platforms

Thanks!
Looking forward to the update.

The autoplay update works!

Thank you!

Is there anyway I can change the auto play voice to male?

My autoplay has always been male voice on the WK site, but this app only plays back in a female voice.

I’ve tried updating it on WK site, but no luck on the app.

Thanks again for the update!

Hello,
I just updated the app and now all the menus and such are automatically translated in the language of my phone (French). The problem is, it’s AI translation and it’s baaaaad…
How can I revert the app to regular English? Please!

oh interesting, it’s supposed to reflect whatever your wanikani settings are, not force feminine voice, I’ll take a look

ah! sorry about that. I was using this project to learn how to localize apps in multiple languages, and I thought whats the worst that could happen with a bunch of AI translation… OK let me think… maybe a force english mode, and I’ll try to improve the French as well.

Until then, it does turn out that the system can force the app to one of the languages installed on your device, so long as you have both French and English setup, then for Gakugame you can force to English

  • iOS: Settings > Gakugame > Language > English -
  • Android: Settings > Apps > Gakugame > Language > English

Thanks for the reply. I tried going to those settings but the app doesn’t appear on the list. I’ve got the 3 languages set up on my phone, French, English and Japanese but French is the default. I could set English as the default for my whole phone but that’s not very practical for me. (I’m on android)

ah yeah, I just found that bug in my code actually, missing some xml flags for android so that’s why it doesn’t show up, it’ll be fixed on next release (android on the way)

Much appreciated!

Please let me know when the next update drops.

ok 1.1.6 is on its way through Apple review, and an updated 1.1.6 for Android to keep everything together. It has the default voice fix and lets you choose from the app, also in theory localized languages are better and more natural now. also you can edit user synonyms properly now, and fixed some bugs, particularly some UI stuff with iOS 26 search tab

Muchas Gracias!

I think I noticed a bug.

When doing my quick reviews via multiple choice, I’ve noticed that on some review items I have been marked incorrectly for either the reading or meaning although I have chosen the correct option.

Hello, I really like the app but it’s had me do the first five radicals ten times even though I’ve gotten them all right. When I ask for more lessons, it just has me repeat them again. Am I missing something?

hmm, definitely a bug, will investigate; are you iOS or android?
