Intermediate Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: 人質の朗読会 // Next: すずめの戸締り

I’d vote for it at one chapter per week (7.5 pages), but I’d abstain from voting at a faster pace than that.

I’m guessing IBC would be a faster pace, but I’m not familiar with IBC pacing.

That said, I do plan to read some Bocchi this year.

I would assume IBC would read 2-3 chapters per week.

I definitely approve of that Bocchi.

セーラー服と機関銃 !

Really interesting so far with a triple first place and a few others at 20-something %. Curious to see who’ll win!

What happens if there’s a tie??

If there’s a two-way tie and one or both are fairly short, we’d just do both.

A three-way tie (or a two-way tie between longer books) probably calls for a one-user-one-vote tiebreaker poll. Don’t think we’ve ever had a three-way tie before, but I’m fairly sure I recall having tiebreakers.

Luckily the Internet™ doesn’t forget

We had one situation where two books were tied in first place (that was コンビニ人間 and Haruhi Suzumiya), but there was not much overlap between the two fan bases, so we read both in parallel, basically dividing up the group (with a very small number of people reading both). Then there were a few situations where a manga and a book were tied, and in that case we read the manga first (as a short pick of 6 weeks or less) and the book second, without a new poll in between. And in one case we actually had a (even 3-way!) tiebreaker poll (between キッチン, Your Name, and 氷菓) where キッチン won.

If you want to know more, there is the “Book Selection Polls” dropdown in the “Historic Votes” section in the OP.

Are you ready to take the next step in terms of reading speed and/or difficulty? The Advanced Book Club is waiting for you! The poll spans two types of books: Those written in modern Japanese that are too long for the Intermediate club (they will be read at a pace of 30-50 pages per week, usually starting slower and ramping up over time) and harder books, usually because they are old and/or literary. Those are usually short, and so we read them at about 15 pages per week.
If that sounds great to you, then wait no longer and vote for the next pick: [Vote now for the next pick!] Advanced Japanese Book Club // Now reading: 傲慢と善良 - #907 by NicoleIsEnough

In case it piques anyone’s interest, here is (I think) a trailer for the original セーラー服と機関銃 movie - based on 赤川次郎’s novel

We have a new winner!!! It is

セーラー服と機関銃

It seems like this club likes the current 赤川 pick and wants to see more!
@Domjcw would you be willing to run the club?

Sadly, at the same time we have to say goodbye to Kaguya-sama who has received low interest in the last three polls. Which frees up another space for a new nomination

Great news! Looking forward to more crazy plot twists with 赤川次郎

In theory, yes. I would need a bit of hand-holding, since I don’t know the mechanics of setting up the main thread and weekly chapters/sections, nor how best to divide the book.

Great! We will get the rest sorted, I’m sure

For starters, you can have a look at this post if you like: Tips for Running a WaniKani Book Club
It should provide you with most of what you need. If there is something missing, please don’t hesitate to speak up (either in that thread or here).
For the book club schedule, I find it most helpful to first set up the club’s home thread and discuss everything in there. You could start with figuring out how many pages each chapter of the book has (or ask in the thread for help if you don’t own the book yet) and then try to find a schedule that works for the envisioned reading pace, which is ~15 pages per week for this club (a little ramp-up phase is ok if that fits the chapter sizes). And if you are unsure about the schedule, just ask the club participants :+1:

Congrats to the winner!

I had nominated とんがり帽子のアトリエ but didn’t vote for it myself in the end, because there are many novels that sounded appealing to me and the IBC is a great way to get help getting better at reading novels. So I don’t know if I’ll ever vote for とんがり帽子のアトリエ…

However it is getting many votes everytime, it’s the top manga of the poll, and I am interested in reading it.

I am willing to start it as a separate club, that would have the same pace as the IBC, if there are people who are interested in reading it together? What do you guys think?

Anonymous poll:

  • I’m interested
  • Not really, I want to read the IBC pick and that manga but don’t see myself commit to both at the same time
  • No opinion / other opinion (feel free to comment)

I’m interested, but I’m not sure if I can commit myself to it before May - there’s a ton of book clubs here and over at Natively that I’m in and/or possibly joining. But I’d probably do my best to join anyway, considering that I’m actually more interested in it than in some of the other clubs!

Also I can’t say I would be sad if it was read slower than the usual IBC pace…

Likewise for me. My reading schedule is booked through April, although parts of the schedule are flexible.

I’d probably only be able to commit to one chapter per week myself, so I’ve already accepted that I’d always be trailing behind a club.

The good news is that he’s written enough books that the club could pick 赤川 books for the next century and not run out

I’m definitely interested! But I also wouldn’t be sad if the pace wasn’t IBC level. 殺人犯 is my first IBC and the pace still feels brutal. I don’t know if I can make a habit of this.

Thank you @Akashelia for cleaning up after me everywhere :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’m personally not very interested in manga, and I prefer novels. That said, as others have pointed out, there are many clubs, so if IBC ever votes for a manga, I’m happy to sit out for a book and read on own or try another club for a round.
