I like the Redesign

I also like the new design but the red color for apprentice was a bit too much imo.

It would be cool if we could customize the colors via the settings. I don’t want to use any scripts, and that would be such a simple feature to implement.

I don’t think there was one, which also explains the reaction. After I finished my reviews yesterday, it just suddenly looked different without a warning. That sucked. I hope they learn and have a (closed) beta next time before a major change.

I pretty strongly dislike the old SRS level colours (and for that matter, names - ‘guru’ is a Sanskrit word which doesn’t have any relevance to Japan, and having that below ‘master’ is deeply weird) so I’m looking forward to seeing them change.

As for the new header, I kinda like it. I like the logo, I think it’s an improvement over the old one which doesn’t really make sense unless you’re bilingual and get the pun; the new logo communicates that better and it’s more readable. Losing the level is unfortunate but foregrounding lessons and reviews with the eye-catching colours (and, finally, actual numbers above 42) is very good.

I like it too. Would like for the user’s current level to appear somewhere outside of a drop-down menu, but it’s also not a deal-breaker.

I also like new logo that looks clean and clear! The old one was more like an illustration and yes, little bit outdated.

I somehow missed the new colors as I do my reviews with an app almost all the time

The release notes of the first build of their iOS app mentioned that they set the color to match the “new” scheme and they used the new logo already, so that part wasn’t too surprising.
The fact that they didn’t warn developers when they have a thread (and a mailing list, I think?) just for that is pretty annoying though.
I do agree with people mentioning a beta preview would have been nice, especially to allow scripts to transition smoothly.

I think the mailing list is only for API changes though.

Well, yeah, but that’s related, since it’s breaking scripts.

I don’t agree. Script developers generally know that if they’re messing with the UI it can break at any time. That’s not to say that having a beta rollout partially for script developers wouldn’t be beneficial. But I think putting UI changes at the same level as API changes for avoiding breaking changes could really handicap their ability to improve the product.

I wasn’t advocating the same level. Just giving a heads-up to people who probably will find that info relevant. (At the very least to give them a date and what kind of change to expect, with no guarantee)

I agree, it’s a good redesign, but they probably should have said something. I like that I can see the exact number of reviews and lessons I have in the queue now. That was one of the most annoying things about the old look. It sucks that some of the scripts I use are broken, but I’ll live until they’re updated.

While I definitely understand some of the complaints about the new UI (especially having small buttons at the top & no level number), I guess I don’t see how most of this is such a big issue. I’ve been doing the beta for the app for a while now, which helped me get used to the new logo for sure, but other than that, people sure have taken the changes to heart way more than I’d have expected. They’re pretty small cosmetic changes that haven’t really affected how I use the site. I’m probably just joining the party late after they’ve reversed some changes, but I like the direction they’re going, even if it’s not perfect yet.

Dont understand why people are bothered about how the site looks/logo looks, you’re here to learn kanji not look at the buttons

I wasn’t around for the old header, but I’ve seen the old logo and it was super sweet.

I just don’t get one thing: where is the kani in the current logo? it just looks like a wani to me. Am I missing something?

Does that mean that Mrs. Krabappel (Bart’s teacher) is half カニ and half リンゴ?

They’re saving that for the next redesign
