How do I know which On’yomi reading to use? For example, 代金. I can’t remember if it’s だいきん or たいきん. Any tips to remember?
Exposing yourself to more examples and vocabulary will probably help. The words themselves are the core element, and it is cumbersome to constantly be trying to do mental calculations to parse various readings.
Rather than trying to come up with tricks for individual kanji and their various readings (which, I will admit, do sometimes exist if you have certain etymology knowledge, etc., but are tricky to keep track of), as you learn more words and cement these words, it will come into focus.
たいきん can be several other common words (大金 - large amount of money, 退勤 - leaving work), and だいきん is pretty much only 代金.
You could search for webpages or videos, etc., that use these words to help situate them in your mind better.
If you have a really hard time remembering, try thinking up your own mnemonic. Also try using the word throughout the day, even just saying it randomly.
