To some extent there is limitation to progressing imposed by the tool itself, as the next level does not become available to you until you have moved current level items far enough along (to guru level), and even within your current level new vocab items are only made available once you progress new kanji at that level as well. So what is available to you at any point in time will be limited by your progress thus far. I was just very surprised that the apprentice queue could get that large. I suspect that some significant portion must be from items which you have progressed to guru (and therefore unlocked batches of new items) but have then dropped back in to apprentice. I have definitely seen my apprentice queue spike on me even though I have done no new lessons, when I miss a bunch of reviews on guru items that drop back down (which is just telling me I need to spend more time on them). My apprentice queue level floats around between 80 and 200, whilst I am thinking about keeping it at around 125. I aim for 125. Sometimes I will move 40 or 50 items out of apprentice when a review session had a lot of apprentice level 4 items (and I had a good review session). Sometimes I will add 20 or 30 to the pile when a review session had a lot of guru items (and I had a less than stellar review session). My number of reviews per day is usually around 200, give or take 20 or so.

I did get sick for a while, then better, then sick again. The kind of sick where I wasn’t really thinking about apps or putting this particular one my app on vacation mode. On top of it all I moved to a new country and learning German out of necessity, not fun (like Japanese). So my brain was pulled in a few directions. Then once I finally felt I had a settled routine with work and home the 'rona hit and my routine completely changed. I lost my rhthym a lot of focus, and couldn’t remember a lot of things. But I am re-settled, refocused and actually using scripts now. But I thought at some point I would drop levels again if I got so many wrong consistently so I did not pay too much attention. It’s strange though, I don’t know why I wouldn’t get all these. Now that I am seeing them again I am burning through them. I haven’t actually forgotten them. But this is just for fun so I am not thinking too hard on it. Some people play candy crush, I “play” wanikani.

I was way behind on my lessons, so I upped my Apprentice count over 200 for the first time. Yours really is something else, but your progress seems great, just keep it up.

I have set myself some rules to avoid this from happening:
-if my apprentice count is higher than (120 on busy times, 200 on quiet times) I can’t do lessons
-I can do lessons only if reviews are under 50, and better if it is 0.
-Even if I am far from the limit of 120-200 apprentice, the max number of lessons I do in a day is 25. And the minimum (Unless I am over the limit) is 10.
This has stabilized my peace quite well. I’m lvl 17 in 130 days and advancing steadly.

Keep going! My apprentice count was getting out of hand when I noticed it was sneaking up to 300. I lost my motivation and found WK super stressful because it felt like there was no end in sight 
Keep up with your reviews, you’ll start to recognise vocab and kanji a lot easier with less apprentices and your accuracy will improve as a result of that too

Of course, everyone has their own preference, but I would suggest doing lessons based on your apprentice count. For example, I only do lessons when my apprentice count is below 50 and do just enough lessons so it stays between 50-55-ish. This is obviously the lower end of the spectrum because I’m busy (and also lazy lol), but try out some different amounts and see what works for you.

Also remember all those newly guru’d items will come round for review again next week, so probably avoid too many new lessons this week.

Figure out what is comfortable for you. Whatever will make it so you don’t want to give up. Hopefully you found the breaking point (congratulations again on having the courage and drive to drop that crazy number!) and you know where you DON’T want to be again.
I have a nice schedule setup for myself. My goal is to try to level up within every 10 days. Goal this year is level 15 and by Dec 2021, I hope to be 60 (but will continue the exercise for as long as it takes to burn it all!)
I do roughly 20 lessons every day. This has kept my apprentice level between 55-120 or so Apprentice items.
Today was different though. I understand a lot of spoken Japanese so I am at an advantage.
When I was doing my lessons today, I set the filter to 27 vocabulary (I have open Kanji but I try to close off all vocab from the previous level before I do the first set of Kanji on level up, but get them done before I get the next set with the Guru radicals). In those 27, there were maybe 2 I didn’t get. Since I had 82 lessons open at start and these were pretty easy for me, I did 10 more. I won’t go beyond 40 though. I have found I really regret the Guru/Master/Enlighten days when I have that many appear with other lessons.
