Horror story to read on Halloween?

Hi everyone!

I’ve been reading some light horror for the whole of October, but for Halloween I’m thinking I’d like to read something particularly chilling/scary/unsettling. I’m specifically looking for something short, that I could start and finish on the day.

Ideas so far: Anything by Junji Ito. A story out of ZOO. 人間椅子 by Edogawa Ranpo.

Any other ideas or recommendations?

Oooh if you end up deciding to do 人間椅子 I might try to join you! It’d be fun to read something spooky for the season, maybe a little impromptu discussion group? :eyes:

A third if you have recommendations of how/where to read it! although I think I would probably prefer the Ito version instead

It’s available for free on Aozora, Bookwalker and Amazon. There’s even an audio vesrion on youtube. I wouldnt know about a physical copy.

Anything in particular you’d recommend?

Let’s do it then! We could discuss it here, or I can make a new thread so people can join later, unrelated to Halloween!

Thank you!

Ah, rather I meant I’d like to read the Ito version of 人間(にんげん)椅子(いす) just because I enjoy his work.

If you want something more horror adjacent than horror, his manga about his cats is a fun

Oh right, I had forgotten about that! I’ll probably leave it for after I read the original though.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I’ll only touch it if I know for certain nothing bad happens to the cats. :eyes: I can only stomach horror if it happens to humans.

He’s not a monster.

I think there’s an epilogue that talks about how long they lived but it’s daily life with a horror element, so nothing bad happens to the cats as far as I recall. I don’t have access to the copy I own though.

Sounds like a good plan! I wanted to read some Edogawa for some time already

I’m unusually busy on Monday, so I will probably read the majority of it on the 1st (which is Allhallows so it’s still about spirits and stuff :ghost:, no?), but other than that, count me in!

If there’s already a group who want to read it right now, you could as well make it a mini-bookclub (just one thread ofc) over in the Book Clubs category - then it might be easier to find for people?

Yay! The more the merrier! And of course, November 1st still counts as a spooky day!

That’s the plan! I’ll do it later today when I find some time. :+1:
