Happy to announce that I just burned my first items

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to shout to the world that I have burned my first item.

I know it is just a small step, still very far from level 60. I have seen many posts here about reaching level 60, and now it is a little bit closer to me. Still, I managed to reach level 20 in those 6 months, so I assume I will need about 1-2 more years to learn everything.

Here are some stats if you are interested:

I would like to add few notes.

First, I am happy to announce that my motivation has not diminished even the slightest. I am still as happy to learn 日本語 as I was at the beginning. Something about the gamified nature of WaniKani pushes me forward. I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but I am 100% sure I will get to the end.

I do lessons every morning, and reviews at least few times a day when I can, so my review queue is almost always empty. It gets hard after weekend when I visit parents, I do only 5 lessons those days, and come home to pile of 200-300 reviews. But I get through it in an hour or two and continue normally. You can even see it in the graphs.

Recently I switched from 15 to 20 lessons per day, than back, and not I am on 20 again. This consistency helped me greatly. It is much better than doing however many lessons I feel like taking, because that strategy leads to spikes in reviews.

Regarding future studies, I think it is time to bite the bullet, and start reading frequently. I am almost done with N5 grammar on Bunpro. I tried reading few children stories and it was P-A-I-N-F-U-L …but that will get better over time, …right? I have noticed that many words in those stories are in WK levels 21-30, so I guess I have about 10 more levels until I can expect to actually understand the lowest level of stories. I’ll keep trying, though. For now it is about remembering words in real context.

Fun fact, I saw 不正 in the same review session as my first burned item. Level 4 and still in Guru stage. I can’t believe how many times I failed that item! Stats say I had it in review 18 times (so far).

Anyway, I’ll be going for now. Sorry for wall of text. Expect another one from me at level 60, and maybe later when I take the JLPT tests. Who knows.

Sincerely,
ヤロスラフ

I’m with you! I consistently fail 不正 too (amongst many others!).

If you’re interested in the JLPT, I wouldn’t wait until after level 60. :eyes:

I don’t plan to go for N5 or N4 tests. Nearest place is not that close. Maybe I will go for N3 later, I’ll decide when I feel like I can pass the test.

At level 30 you would already know more than 88% of the N3 kanji, which is plenty to pass it. Level 45 gets you more than 91% of the N2 kanji. (Stats from wkstats ). I tend to feel it’s the grammar and general reading ability that matters for the JLPT rather than pure kanji knowledge.
