Good methods to study when alone (on the clock kind of guy)

I need some guidance on how I can practice Japanese on my own. I don’t normally have time to talk to people, but have plenty of time with sitting at work and reading up my textbook and watching a few videos. I heard shadowing was useful for imitating accent and speaking, but I want a few more methods to help diversify my studying and self practice.

Would help to know what your language goals are - might shape some of what would be best use of time.

I think listening practice is one of the easiest things to get behind on as a self-studier, so I would highly recommend that. You can use a shadowing book for that even if you’re not working on speaking practice.

Active use of the language is also easy to get behind on. Could try an app like HelloTalk, posting stuff, getting corrections from natives, that sort of thing. That’s something I need to get back into.

Beyond that, catch up on WaniKani reviews!

For sake of diversifying study, I’d throw in writing practice as well. For me, it helps reinforce memory of kanji and grammar. Just run through drills of kana, kanji, or simple sentences with the vocab/grammar you know or see in your books.

You could try reading a manga and looking up words as you go. You might need a bit more grammar before you can start this, though.
