I have been frustrated with the way WaniKani works, specifically the grading. I know it’s impossible to program all correct answers, but there are several vocabulary that I learned a “wrong” meaning for. When I look on Jisho, my answer is correct. I am aware I can put in my own synonyms, but it’s frustrating to lose progress. I get downgraded before I realize my answer is “wrong.”
Also, I wish there was a way to undo answers like on Bunpro. I’ve been moving through the levels very slowly because I make a lot of typos. I for sure know the readings of certain kanji, but because of my typos I get downgraded. I know if I slowed down it would help but I don’t want to spend hours a day doing WK when I can use that time for more-focused N2 study.
Additionally, I want a way to mark certain words and kanji as mastered like on Bunpro. There are myriad words and kanji I’ve had “burned” into my brain for years now, but I still have to unlock and upgrade them on wanikani.
I’m just frustrated at how slowly I’m moving through the levels. I am not learning very much from WK at this point. I’m studying for N2 now (already took N3), and at this level WK is only helping a little bit compared to other resources I’m using.
I would stop using it completely but I paid for the lifetime membership so it feels like a waste.
Install the double check script and you will be able to undo your answers. Search the forum for it.
What I did for the vocabulary I didn’t want to learn was to add the letter n as a synonym. Then when the review shows up, I just hit n as the answer and didn’t waste any time on it.
In economics, there is a term for this: sunken cost fallacy, which is the tendency to keep investing time, money, or resources because you are already invested in it, even when giving up is clearly the best solution. This is one reason I’m very weary of paying for a lifetime subscription of anything (I don’t have one for WK).
Anki mode script, especially for meaning part. Third party mobile apps could be a good alternate option.
Of course, Double Check +/- No typo (no cigar) could work too.
Self Study Quiz script lets you study ahead, including ones in future levels as well. Do you study vocab anywhere else? There may be a script for custom vocab, but other platforms could easily be more stable and adaptive.
You can add vocab from WaniKani to Anki with Yomitan, or add to Kitsun with some kind of exports.
For typo, use the double check script, for slowness, be sure to use the lesson advanced mode so that you pick all the radical when a new level start, then the following day all the kanji. You should be able to move at one level per week with your preexisting knowledge.
Like marciow1 said it may just be sunken cost fallacy though… But if you decide to stick with it, the good news is that according to wkstats.com level 16 is when all the N5 and N4 kanji are done and from that point on N2 kanji ramp up significantly.
for the radicals I just put a as their meaning. thank you so much for the suggestions!!
Thank you!
Thank you!! I’ll look for the script
I tried the double check mod and already my WK life has improved dramatically
