From Pleasant to Painful

Hi,

I started wanikani a long time ago (I think somewhere in 2023). I am currently in level 11, here are some statistics:

Apprentice: 43
Guru: 108
Master: 167
Enlightened: 175
Burned: 1247

I was stuck in level 10 the longest. Took me ages to go through, and most of the time in level 10 I was burning my kanji.

My question is? Does it get better? The names of the series per 10 levels (pleasant, painful, hell…) do not forbode well and I am actually kind of overwhelmed and wondering if there is still a point in continuing as it already goes slow as a snail at this point. If “Pleasant” was painful, I wonder what “Painful” will be…

I really think that WaniKani is doing its users and itself a disservice with these names because, no, it’s just not true. The more kanji you know the easier it becomes to deal with new kanji.

I do recommend doing practice outside of WaniKani if you aren’t already however, otherwise you’ll never practice those burned kanji and eventually forget them. If you aren’t studying grammar already, now is probably a good time to start.

It’s more just a bit of fun from the devs

As you go up the levels, you get more reviews as stuff comes back for burning, so it’s just a joke on that

The kanji do become somewhat more complex but then you’ve become a lot better at learning them

I wouldn’t take heed of the naming at all and just treat it as some fun

漢字より文法のほうが簡単だと思いますけど。

Don’t fret then, I doubt you’ll find that it gets harder. Especially since you’re going at a leisurely pace so you won’t get crushed in a sudden avalanche of reviews.

I would say the hardest tiers are probably 10-20 as you’re still a bit new at that point but the kanji stop being so pictographic as stuff like 三, 山 or 口, or 50-60 as everything looks like something else.
