From 0 to Reading Everyday: Step by Step and Comprehensive List of Resources

This post should be stickied… fantastic overview. Mostly we followed the same path but it would have saved me a ton of time if I had seen an overview like this 2 years ago.

That’s so nice to hear, thanks! Next step is someone commenting in two years that the plan worked for them too :stuck_out_tongue:

Hehe I can already guarantee that your plan works

Practically the only thing I did different was stuying all Bunpro N5 to N3 points, not just the ones I encountered. Your method is probably just as effective. In hindsight I would have focussed less on the SRS in Bunpro, just get at least familiar with N5 to N3, read books/manga and then keep looking up the grammar that I forgot or isn’t clear while reading. I took a couple of months studying practically only grammar and that just isn’t really effective.

For your next VN I can recommend Steins;Gate if you haven’t read that yet. I read a ton of VN’s but S;G and S;G0 remain my favorites so far. Slow build-up, huge payoff

Thanks for the rec!! I keep hearing great things about S;G and S;G0, I got both a long time ago (thank you Steam sales!) not sure when I’ll get around to play them, it’s going well with the book from the first post, 191 pages in so far, but also 330 to go! And then I will probably read something short to change a bit. But S;G and S;G0 will definitely happen eventually, probably some time next year
What are you reading now?

I just finished the Muv Luv trilogy vn’s, but I read those in English, otherwise that would have cost me 10 years to read in Japanese  But despite the high praise it gets I really did not enjoy it. Endless rambling about nothing… I would probably have loved it when I was 15 or so.

Started White Album 2 now, a lot of people seem to love that one.

In Japanese I use Satori the most to read, especially love all the explanations the owner gives in the comment section under each story. That guy really knows how to explain grammar and it’s nuances.

On my Kindle I bought a ton of ‘Japanese short stories’ books which I really enjoy, although it’s scary without the help that Satori gives

And lastly I’m reading the VN Yosuga no Sora in Japanese. The dialogues are not that hard to understand but the descriptive text is more complex. When I started reading it I struggled with every sentence, until there was more dialogue. Yomitan is a huge help, although it was quite a puzzle setting up Yomitan, a texthooker and Anki correctly. But so worth all the trouble.

Btw I read that you could use some practice with Katakana - on Steam there is an app called You can Kana. Very well made and it’s a great way to practice Kana with.

Oh I’ve heard about Muv Luv too, and also heard that it was VERY long, I would have been mind blown if you had completed it in Japanese already
Already had White Album on my radar but not White Album 2, interesting!
Nice that you also enjoy Satori  I totally agree with you. The notes are such gold mines.
Thanks for the recommendation for Kana  I am getting better already, can see it in my book where there is plenty of words to practice on and no Yomitan (デラックスツイン, ベルキャプテン, ハウスキーピング, デリケート…). I also tried playing Pokemon a bit but I can’t seem to have their Japanese names sticking to my memory

If you go for White Album - for what I read White Album 1 doesn’t even come close to WA2 and they’re independent stories. WA2 is not released in the West but there’s an unofficial translation. You can DM me if you need help finding it.

Hope you love Steins as much as I did (and hopefully won’t make you cry as hard as I did  )

(Edit - just realised that my Avatar probably already was a hint that I really love Steins
Going to Japan for a month in November and visiting all the places where Steins took place is on the list

Haha I love it when people in Japan find real life locations of things they like! Enjoy
One day I too, will go to Zanarkand :upside_down_face:

Ah, the other game that made me cry

When I started (seriously) on the Genki lessons from TokiniAndy, I thought maybe I need to have them on an SRS review like the ones in WK. The lesson 3 was so jam-packed with info that I had to break it into two parts. Today I’m going to go over the last 30 mins of the video. So I decided to try out the Bunpro (I’m on the trial period). I just want to ask how you “put the grammar points” on review. Is it through Paths (in conjunction with the text books) or Cram? Haha Thanks again!

I sincerely hope I will be one of them!

Me too! You can do it :muscle:
I’m at work now but will write you a detailed reply with screenshots and everything later when I’m home

Will wait patiently for your reply! Keep safe.

お待たせしました。

The website has changed a bit since I have used it, they have a lot of new features regarding vocab, I can’t vouch for those as I have only used the website for grammar.

So I think I had the Genki 1 path selected, I think that feature is gone and is now replaced by decks. The path feature was nice, all the entries for each lessons were grouped under a lesson label so that was making it pretty easy to add them to your reviews after each Genki Lesson.
I think the equivalent for that now is the Grammar Deck for Genki 1 3rd edition:

(this link includes Vocab too but at least the items are grouped by lesson. There is a list for grammar only but then it’s not grouped by lesson, that’s a pity)

So after I had finished a lesson, I would add all of the grammar points from the chapter to my reviews via this button:

(or Mark as Mastered if I felt I had it mastered, for example です or か)

That’s basically it, then I would just do my reviews everyday. Then the graph will appear on the dashboard as you study grammar:

I did use the Cram feature a bit, if I had 0 reviews and wanted to practice a certain chapter, but not a lot. I had enough with Wanikani reviews and Bunpro reviews.

Then when I joined the ABBC for the first time, I filled out the Grammar Sheet for it:

Every time I was seeing a Grammar Point in the wild, I was looking for it on Bunpro and adding it to my reviews too.

After some time, I would also skim the N5 / N4 entries simply via the list of grammar points, and if I recognized an entry that I was familiar with, I was also adding it to my reviews.

Hope that helps!

Hello~

Hmm the “path” can be found under the Contents tab, and when I clicked on it, it says “Path Deck” so

Coincidentally, that’s what I opened when I tried to add the grammar points I encountered in lesson 1-2. I chose the Genki 1 2nd edition (grammar) since it’s the one used in the TokiniAndy vids, and when I opened the “complete” version, it has both vocab and grammar.

But you’re right. It’s not group by lessons. It does appear to be in order according to the lessons.

Yup it definitely helped a lot! I realized early on that I don’t have that much patience when it comes to reading textbooks XD I prefer to watch Andy’s vids and taking notes on important concepts and formulas. I got intimidated by bunpro’s dashboard so thank you for your help!

Yes but when you open a link it just open an URL with “deck” inside, no longer with path and doesn’t look like it used to

Awesome! Good luck and have fun!

Found a post with how it used to look like if you’re curious:

I was just about to ask you that! You can read minds?! jkjk

I can see how the old layout is easier to add in the grammar points in bulk. But oh well. Gotta use what I have rn.

In line with that, I read some of your study logs, and I noticed you made a note about reviews for bunpro (up to 10 mistakes). What does that mean?

You can see on the screenshot in the red rectangle, the left number is the number of reviews correct and the number on the right is the number of reviews I have done for this session.
I had sometimes a very big pile of reviews (I think because there was a ghost feature, adding reviews to your reviews, I don’t know if they still do that), so I wasn’t trying to clear all my reviews everyday but instead I would stop at 10 mistakes.
So for example if I failed 5 reviews after doing 20 reviews out of my pile of 200, it shows 15/20. I continue. I get some more right, some more wrong, at some point I get to 36/46, that’s ten mistakes, I call it a day for Bunpro and move on to Satori Reader or whatever else I had on my program

Ahh thank you so much for all the help! Thanks for being patient with me and answering all my questions. You’re amazing!
