"Flesh&Blood" Vol. 9 - Pirate Series Reading Club 🏴‍☠️ ⛵

Chapter 9 thoughts

In this last chapter, Kaito succumbs to his longing for Jeoffrey and literally takes things in his own hands.

I liked Kaito’s internal monologue and his reflections about Vincente. :eyes: He hates him, but he’s also reliant on him - and so, there’s some self-loathing going on here. :c Poor Kaito.

Well, Kaito is also in for a much longer questioning, where they’re testing to see if he’s telling the truth or not. While not being a form of torture, it sounds like torture to have to field all those questions. ^^; Ganbatte Kaito!

El Escorial Library frescos are stunning works of art! :astonished:

I really wanna visit this place some time. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Also, thanks to looking into the library I finally found who the priest who showed Vincente and Kaito to their rooms was: was: José de Sigüenza - Wikipedia Seems @eefara you already found him out. I’ll get to read your comments later. XD

TIL also about the name for this sort of 3-part Renaissance art piece: TrĂptico

Apparently it’s this one! :eyes:

When closed

Well, Kaito the art critic creates a bit of fuss. ^^’ But it turns out Vincente is pretty good at art analysis as well! :artist:

I have a bit left of this chapter, but will sleep for now!

As I commented above, I think it’s rather this one: The Garden of Earthly Delights - Wikipedia

Given the title and all…

I never got any search hits for it, so just took what Google offered. I love the outside panels as well on this one. :eyes:

Paradise lost is a pretty apt description for this art piece.

Chapter 9 continuation

Things had clearly been going too well, so far, and the investigation of Kaito has brought out a Fransiscaner accusing Kaito of heresy. He’s never getting a break, poor guy. Now he risks being burnt at the stake as an inquisition is imminent! :scream:

Might be, at the very least, there’s the risk of it all getting repetitive I think from a writing POV. I can’t say I miss it.[spoiler] :eyes:

I love the character art for this one. I think we do get this feeling his attitude and mannerisms might be a bit similar to Jeoffrey’s! XD

Thanks for the link! I didn’t stop to look up which song here. It’s a real sailer’s anthem, no wonder Vincente was touched! :face_holding_back_tears:

I was a bit surprised by this, ngl. it seems like one of those Japanese mindsets, like “everyone’s gotta work”. I mean, we don’t get to hear some internal monologue of Kaito secretly planning how to use work as a means to scout and later flee the palace. That I would understand. But, here, he seems just to loathe having nothing to do. ^^;

Reading more about those 3-part artworks, it seems it’s not uncommon that they depict Paradise to the left and Hell to the right, while the central panel is the main subject of sorts. But, yeah, it seems like the main theme remains “fall from paradise”. Now this tripico seems to be especially discussed due to the central panel’s sexual and evocative content.

I won’t repeat the wikipedia article, but rather, I’ll give my own personal view, as someone that did historical research for a time, be it relevant or not - you decide and reject of course! ^^

But yeah, tripicos are “usually” - from what I know, something to read from left to right…so the outside shows the world as God made it before humans. Then we’re shown how paradise was lost and the results in the middle panel. Not the usual idea of things just turning into hardship, but rather into sexual relief and pleasure, debauchery! Then there’s the right panel of hell - again a common composition of these tripicos. (it was the same in the tripico I posted pics of, as you might have realized. same Netherlandan artist as well)

Got a little busy again, but I was able to finish this volume. It’s been a bit though so just some quick thoughts on the last chapter.

Chapter 9

Back to Kaito’s perspective. In his room in the monastery, he contemplates his current relationship with Vicente. Part of him feels like it’s a betrayal to Geoffrey to get too close to him, and another part of him knows that there isn’t anyone else at the moment he can rely on. Further complicating this is the fact that according to the history he knows Vicente has a high chance of dying in the coming war and he doesn’t want to put himself through growing attached to someone he knows is likely to die. Then, his questioning with the Spanish king continues, and while the king is trying to size him up Kaito is doing the same, but he’s having difficulty getting a read on him. Just when things seem to be going pretty smoothly so far, a message comes in. Kaito is being suspected as a heretic and is once again faced with a trial, this time with even worse stakes since he’s dealing with the notorious Spanish inquisition. Ending off with quite the cliffhanger :scream:

With that ending I’m itching to finally be able to get onto the next volume. Overall felt like a good start to the new arc, it was interesting getting to see the Spanish Court and meet a lot of new characters. Although with that came some more difficult chunks of historical exposition that made reading some parts a little more difficult for me.

Another one for Kaito’s ever growing resume :joy:
