@pyororon Posting my thoughts here now that weâre re-reading volume 1 over on Natively. Figured it was more relevant here, and less likely for clicky fingers to view spoilerish thoughts for a book fourteen books down the line.
(Marking these as spoilers for this whole book in general, since they cover my thoughts on characters and impressions of characters after having read this book.)
Itâs fun going back to Kaitoâs impression of Kazuya way back in volume one, and how he interprets Kazuyaâs actions, now that weâve gotten a look inside Kazuyaâs head. Does make me wonder how obsessive Kazuya was at that point, and how much of it triggered post-Kaitoâs disappearance. It also makes me realize how poor communication was between the two; Iâm sure Kazuya didnât realize just how little Kaito thought of their relationship, even wondering why Kazuya would bother to go to St. Christopher along with him.
Kaitoâs evaluation of his mother is also spot-on at that point as well; itâs interesting to think he softened on both of them post-time tunnel. Kazuya becomes âmy best friendâ and his mom becomes âannoyingâ or some such; I donât think he was this specific. Granted, I guess thereâs no use complaining about your mom while trying to adjust to life 400 years earlier.
It really ended up being great timing for a reread with Kazuyaâs reappearance in the story.
Looking back I feel like I kind of understand why Kaito misunderstands Kazuya, there was definitely a lot of restraint between them in their interactions. Itâs interesting how that seems to be mostly gone now that theyâve reunited despite the fact theyâre still not being completely honest with one another.
His thoughts in that last Kazuya chapter about how he always had to be at the same level as Kaito so that he would rely on him the most makes it seem like it begun before albeit at a different level.
I believe Kazuya even mentioned, too, that he was brought up to be a rather restrained person since his family was; a âdonât be too emotionalâ kind of thing, which could be easily mistaken for not caring or just putting up with someoneâs crap, haha.
I donât even know if Iâd go that far, honestly. I feel like theyâre still holding back, but just in different ways. I feel like itâs going to be really difficult for Kaito to talk about the full range of his feelings for Geoffrey and co., since he (thinks he) knows how hard itâll be for Kazuya to lose him again, and I really doubt Kazuyaâs going to go into detail about how his feelings for Kaito have started turning him into a hoodlum, haha. I do wonder if Kazuya can verbalize his feelings at this point, honestly; he feels a lot like Vicente did before several people pointed out to him, âhuh, you really love Kaito, huhâ â âyeah, like a brotherâ â âlolâ â .
Iâm feeling the same. And not even the same level (though Kazuya probably saw it that way), but just a little bit better/higher, so that Kaito would always rely on him.
True, thereâs less of that awkwardness now but I guess that might be because theyâre each putting on more of a front since they have more to hide. It seems like for them to truly be honest with each other things might have to hit the breaking point again.
@pyororon More thoughts after finishing chapter 1 of F&B1: itâs super interesting that Kaito and Kazuya are completely flipped on the âwhat would they do if they got sucked into a parallel world and could go homeâ scale compared to what actually works out. I had to check once or twice that I was keeping up with who was speaking. My memoryâs also been embarrassed; if youâd asked me before who said what, I wouldâve sworn Kaito had said he wouldâve stayed in the parallel world.
So @pyororon, after re-reading chapter 2 in F&B 1, do you remember if Lily ever mentioned feeling to compelled to go her time tunnel, like Kaito seemed to be for his?
