I wound up unintentionally taking a break from WK at level 31 after having bought my lifetime membership which gave me a backlog of 1200 reviews. This lead to a negative cycle where the backlog made it hard for me to do reviews and the length of time meant I was getting a significant proportion of reviews wrong.
I’d been chipping away at this a little this year and after having a breakthrough during Japanese class last month (it was only me and another classmate who is planning to take N2) I suddenly had a much more positive attitude about my Japanese learning.
I’ve blown away the backlog this month and am back to getting 90-100% of my reviews correct and doing new lessons again. Just wanted to post to say how happy I am to be back on track. I’ve been using graded readers too and once I get a bit further I’m hoping to play games, read manga and books more consistently.
I’ve just reset my progress since everything has atrophied.
Wanikani is so fast now, I’m getting reviews way faster than the old days.
I still think I can reach my goal of reading my light novels before the English translations come out, especially since it looks like they’ve abandoned translating the newer books.
I’m also back after a few years (having reset multiple times and eventually giving up). I just got lifetime and reset to 1 and plan to take it slower this time (plus actually studying grammar this time with MaruMori and doing some immersion with Comprehensible Japanese so I’m not just a kanji robot haha). It’s amazing how much you still remember!
We’ve all been there. Good on you for making your way back! I feel like the community here is a great support system to getting you back on track. Best of luck to you!
Seeing people take on the mountain of reviews that comes with the higher levels of WK really motivates me. Hopefully I can join you in the level 30s at some point soon. (I estimate around 2035)
Finished the first case (a short tutorial to be honest) in Phoenix Wright in Japanese. Think I added about 20 cards to my Anki sentence mining deck so not too bad. Feels like reading is getting slightly easier the more I do it. Was just reading a Famitsu article on a game I’m interested in and although there was a chunk of stuff I had no clue about I could understand the core of the article. Feeling quite motivated for this year!
