Finally achieved this, just in time for the end of SRS stages

Well folks, I got back in to WaniKani 2 months ago after a long hiatus, and had about 2000 reviews waiting for me. Doing reviews every day since June, just today I got this…

0 Apprentice! Just in time too, since soon categories will be no more. Think it’s time to start doing lessons again!

SRS stages are going away?

Yes, see here:

I saw that, but I didn’t think that was going to mean the end of apprentice, guru etc stages.

I just didn’t read on when the technical mumbo jumbo started…

You confused something there. This is just a technicality where a certain term used for a piece of code (or rather several pieces of code that form a system) is changed. The SRS system stays the same, this only affects people who are programming userscripts.

Here’s what the article says I interpreted this to mean the stage names were gone:

Consequences of This Change

Other than this being a breaking change to the API…

We are dropping SRS stage names (burned is here to stay though!). What are SRS stage names? They’re the names we use to identify the stages: Apprentice, Guru, Master, Enlightened, et cetera.

Ah, that’s true. I overlooked that. Still, that only means that Apprentice, Guru, Master and Enlightened will get different names. The system stays exactly the same.

jolly good effort

The system will not be exactly the same because they are considering making changes in the future. We don’t know what the changes will be. We don’t know whether there will be new names or whether they will refer to the stages by numbers. We don’t even know if they are going to follow up on the changes they consider because they have not made their mind on what the changes will be. They may still decide to abort these plans.

What happened is they modified the script API in prevision of the intended changes without actually making the changes to the web site. This is why the system remains the same for now. This is a temporary situation.

As far as I’ve understood it, they’re thinking about running several SRS-systems at the same time. To me this sounds like WK-extensions, meaning new content or at least more drastic differences betweens Radicals, Kanji and Vocabulary. You’re right, it’s a temporary change. But as they said, intervals and the number of stages shall not change.

This is correct.

They have not published their intentions in that regard. As far as I know their plans are not yet finalized. I would say things will probably turn out as you say though. Or the plans may get canceled altogether. We just don’t know yet.

Only for now. When the multiple SRS- systems will be in place intervals and number of stages will change because the SRS-systems will no longer be the same.

I really need to learn to read these updates. I also thought this was only about the API-programming side of things, not something that would really change the user experience. So reading this conversation surprised me a bit. Thanks for clearing things up! ^^

I’m not sure where, but I think I read that they wanted to increase the speed of radical srs

I will be the first to install a userscript that maps whatever the new stage names/numbers are back to apprentice, guru, master, enlightened. If they mess with my colored boxes, I’m going to be very, very unhappy.

It looks like they’re changing the code now so that in the future they can make changes to the SRS.

Getting rid of Apprentice/Guru/etc would be a huge change for the users! I can’t imagine doing it without dropping general announcement first and Aug 17th is only 2 days away.

I have read that too. if I remember correctly it was brought as an example of what multiple SRS can be good for.

Ah then it was probably that

Getting flashbacks when the color themes spontaneous changed last year without warning…only to be quickly changed back hours later

I like how everyone used your post to talk about the update instead of you finally getting achieving your achievement. Congrats, not just to 0 Apprentice, but also getting through 2k reviews.
