My highest is 44, on a WHM that didnāt change jobs until very recently. No boosting, no running from battles, only grinding when I needed to for grabbing bestiary entries. I switched to Dragoon the first time I got a spear, and theyāre at ⦠9. This doesnāt add up in the least without job grinding against low level enemies.
I know that job level increases with actions, even if theyāre useless actions like defend. I also know that the amount of actions needed sharply rises after level 14⦠except for onion knight and dragoon, which barely change at all. Those two would be the easiest jobs to level up.
I tried doing some grinding of job level against low level mobs. It was so boring, and I only got like 3 job levels in five minutes, so I quit.
Yeah the Onion Knight job is particularly odd, by design. Iāll talk more about that on Week 11. This game has some amazing āend game contentā⦠for those who like grinding for hours on end.
Iām definitely not grinding, Iām playing first on the 3D version so when I play the PR I know exactly where to go and I just go there. I do try to level up a bit if I get wiped by the boss but usually the natural progression is enough. I have no explanation! I am not aware that I have any boost enabled but I also didnāt check if they were disabled
Iāve heard some rumors, (you need to have an Onion Knight level 99 at some point? or was it just that the damage is decent at level 99? I donāt know and you donāt need to answer now) thatās why I decided that I might as well stick with the job now and level it up. It doesnāt seem to really happen on the 3D version though. I will try using some more magic and see if it makes a difference.
Rough outline of Onion Knight stat scaling mostly from memory
This is for the original/Pixel Remaster version, I think itās also mostly true for 3D but since the job doesnāt unlock in the same way there could be differences.
The Onion Knight is the worst class in the game with the worst gear in the game, but if you get to level 90+ (thatās character level, not job level IIRC, although both probably help) the stat growth becomes insane. Thereās also hard-to-get gear in the final dungon thatās some of the best (maybe THE best?) in the game and is onion-only.
So if you do all the grind for the levels and for the gear, you end up with a team of unstoppable onion beasts.
To give you an idea, the stat gains for the Warrior job looks like this past level 80 (first column is the level, the rest are the various stats like strength, agility, etc.):
You can see that at level 80 the OK is completely useless, having stats that most other classes outrank by level 10, but then as soon as you reach 90 it explodes and by the time you reach 99 youāre completely maxed out.
The good news is that since this is about character level, you can grind to 99 with whatever job you want and then reclass, you donāt have to be an onion knight all along.
Where do you revive people in this awful town? Apparently programming dragoons was too hard for them so my party turned invisible and the damage just kept happening over and over until someone died in a random fight. Refusing to waste a phoenix down on this
Week 7 thoughts, or, involvement in this game should probably blacklist you from working on games ever again
I finally get it, last week was decent so that it could help contrast and emphasize just how bad this week would be.
As Iāve posted elsewhere on the forums Iāve been through absolute hell with my health so I canāt remember with certainty because it feels like I last played this a few months ago, but I donāt think there was any indication at all that we should come here? So (if Iām not misremembering) we start off wandering the world at complete random, with the correct answer being not only this random place but flying over a pretty particular section of it.
Once you do, you are met with the town that is surely designed intentionally to have people stand in your way the maximum amount possible. Visualization of the largest walkway in this place:
So letās check out that optional dungeon! Oh, itās all walking through invisible walls and slamming your face against blank void tiles, again. My expectations have been subverted, for the 100th time. Itās tedious, genuinely please give me the monster closets from FF2 back. The rest of their dungeon design was a lot better too.
Now we must all play one single job and press its one ability until the boss ends. Even a Bop-It has 3 inputs. Clearing enough inventory space to remove all of the armor from my 4 characters was awful. And since itās only for one fight (not counting a bit of grinding I subjected myself to since jobs start off really bad), changing jobs literally takes far more time than the total time you need the dragoon for!
The random king I learned about 2 minutes ago has cleared the hurdle of caring about his offspring and stabbed himself, which was another sudden death to the tally but probably the least funny one yet.
I guess the two armies staring each other down was kind of cool looking? I have to reach cause this week is pretty much the nadir of game design.
The way hating the end of this game dominates conversations about it so much that people often donāt say anything else about the whole game has me thinking weāre gonna hit the Xenogears zone by then
I should say for how much I might be bringing down the vibe this game doesnāt actually feel the same as Gears to me (which is why Iām still here lol) and I feel, I dunno, morbid curiosity? Like I think this game sucks a lot but in some way Iām at least getting some novelty out of seeing how it decides to annoy me each week. But yeah I really bet the end is gonna be too much from everything Iāve heard.
Tangential but when I played SaGa 3 a little while back they let you jump and you could just go right over the heads of anyone standing in your way and itās one of those things that as soon as I played it Iām constantly sad that I canāt just sail over top rude hallway blocking NPCs.
For me right now itās an easy 1>2>3 of what weāve played; I think itās unfortunate I experienced such a different version of 1 but I think I would probably still feel this way, especially given what youāve said about it. I guess that much is clear enough from what Iāve said.
My other FF plays in my memory are hazy because most were years ago. Tentatively Iād go something like 9>8>7>6>10 but I expect that I look at games very differently than I did then so who knows anymore.
All the latter are good to some degree but as a kid for some reason I could not get into 10 at all. Like if I had to force placements right now with my memories 1 is at least going above 10, maybe even 2 as well. But Iām so curious to revisit it, couldnāt even really tell you specific reasons it didnāt connect with me back then.
I enjoyed FFX when it came out but less so than the PS1 titles. I think I actually gained a deeper appreciation for it as time passed, mainly because I found all FF after that very significantly worse. X and X-2 are effectively the end of FF/Squareās āgolden eraā for me. XII is not terrible but it heralded all the horrible decisions that sunk the franchise for me.
Ahh there, my problem was not continuing haha. I found FF10 worse than all the PS1 ones and then it seemed at the time that the series was veering hard away from being a turn based RPG with MMOs and stuff so i just stopped.
The only prior experience I have with FF is playing about an hour of 14 once. Speaking of which, by the time we get there the free trial will probably be up to level 100 or something
