Driving through Japan with geoguessr I encountered this shop sign:
I suppose it is Yamamoto fuel shop, but why this extra large 山? Does this kanji exist or is it a design element?
Driving through Japan with geoguessr I encountered this shop sign:
ok. Seen from a slightly different position, the extra large 山 converts to a normal 山. It was a (well done!) collage by Google Street View.
It’s a shame it was just a glitch, because I can totally see an extra large mountain being added to one of the lower WaniKani levels .
on’yomi: さあん
kun’yomi: やあま
Thank goodness! I couldn’t find any 異体字 that matched. If you’re interested there are actually a lot of variants for 山, ranging from cool to heavily cursed: u5c71-itaiji-007 (山) - GlyphWiki
There is even one which comes close:
I would probably roll with:
on’yomi: さんざん
kun’yomi: やまじゃま
and the alternative, “modern” spelling of 山々
Well, except for the drain grating at the bottom.

Wouldn’t be surprised if someone has submitted something like that for a “create a kanji contest” and gave it a reading of さんみゃく or something.
Wow, that’s seamless
Slap a 電空 onto it and we’re good
