Example Question (how does すぎる work with adjectives?)

#1

このぼうしは大きすぎます。

This hat is too big.

In this example, why does おおきい become おおき?

Thanks!

When using すぎる you have to use the adjective stem (remove the い at the end).

Here’s a simple explanation: http://www.punipunijapan.com/japanese-grammar-sugiru/

I moved the topic to the grammar section of the forum and renamed the topic to be clearer.

There’s also another topic that you can use if you want for simple grammar questions like this.

BK’s link didn’t seem to have negatives mentioned, so I also recommend looking at this link

Neg+sugiru is pretty rare ime, but its worth learning with the rest of sugiru stuff.
