how was that trip? Learn a lot?

I hope that I can pick up my pace again after this painfully slow, demotivating level of working down my vocabulary pile. The other level that took me longer (the 35 days one) was because my habit got completely messed up by a 5-day vacation.

Some huge spikes here, mostly around longer holidays iirc. Usually, I average something like 12 days / level, which is good. I may be able to end 2023 at level 30, while I was initially targeting level 20 !

This is my third reset and the first time I’ve reached level 15, so taking a bit longer on it rn does make sense. Determined to keep going this time though!

That’s very true. The more kanji you know the easier it becomes to memorize new kanji because you can make all sorts of connections between them. A kanji like 露 can seem daunting for instance, but if you already know 雨 and 路 it becomes a piece of cake. And this way you also reinforce your knowledge of earlier kanji.

I remember when I started WK I was struggling with memorizing the readings for 上. It felt so overwhelming. Eventually it starts “clicking” and it gets easier.

A steady habit at this point. Learning how to learn. Seeking examples from previously read material for all new vocabulary really helps a ton.

Pretty incredible - definitely my favorite vacation yet. We mainly just took in the sights and walked around Tokyo, but here and there I managed to talk to locals! The most educational part of the trip was definitely the museum in Hiroshima - I highly recommend it.

I wonder if anyone has as many resets in their time line as me.

I feel a little uncomfortable with how fast I`m going I should slow down soon.

One year ago, in 2022, I made it to level 9. Something happened and long story short, I quit WK for a year. I had the lifetime version of WK, so whenever I decided to come back, the option was there. But “when”, was the answer.
One year later, I recently visited Japan. This short visit revitalized my motivation to learn reading Japanese, and so I picked WK back up again. Coming back to WK, I had no confidence on the stuff learned, so I made the decision to reset back to level 1.
Fast forward to today, I reached level 9 once again, with more motivation to continue!

Since reaching level 7 I usually have at least 50 per day to do. I seem to rarely be able to get above a 75% score, but I’m not quite sure about that. I realize part of my slowness issue is I have a notebook where I try to physically write down the kanji as part of the practice. And so, if I get it wrong, I check for the correct answer and write it down in my notebook to help with the memorization process, although I’m not sure that is worth the time commitment now.

Yeah, I definitely have that issue. I feel like I should be doing better at not forgetting things I have already learned. And I think WaniKani wants you to add 5 per day in order to progress. I tried that before and found myself overwhelmed, but I think it might be time to try it again and be OK with feeling a little overwhelmed.

OK, I just timed myself. I missed yesterday and so I have 204 reviews today. In one hour (not writing anything down) I have 71% 65, 139. I assume that means 71% correct, 65 reviews complete and correct and 139 to go. I’m guessing it will take me an additional 2 hours or 2 hours and 15 minutes to get through this entire review so I will have spent 3 hours and 15 minutes today reviewing.

I’ve fallen into a pretty consistent groove, but I wish I had started doing that earlier. The left part annoys me so much…

I’m also ignoring the fast levels and continuing my regular pace, since my review load is big enough as-is.

yeah I used to do the writing stuff to help memorize but I dropped it quickly . For me it was a lot of work for minimal gains

Stonks.

As for me, I very likely have the worst looking chart of anyone who hasn’t completely dropped out of WaniKani. That said, I wish there was an easy way to get the accurate dates from the API for people who’ve been here a while and don’t have the complete data for the level_progressions endpoint. That said, I’m currently getting much closer to a really accurate result, but it’s still janky, so until then, all y’all get is “stonks”

Alright now that I’ve said that, I think I actually did succeed this time.
The code I made is a bit of a mess (ended up combining parts of the heatmap method with the wkstats method), but I’ve compared the result against my journal and an old screenshot and it’s impressively accurate. So, here you go, my level up chart. Hope you can use this as either motivation to not do this, or as a reminder for how bad things can get whilst still chugging along :joy:
