Context sentence for 錦 is actually for 錦織

The context sentence for 錦 is

高級錦織で作られた着物を買いました。
I bought a kimono made from luxury brocade.

However, there is no standalone 錦 there – instead the (にしき) is part of 錦織(にしきおり)、which is not taught on WK.
I think, this is not the first time I’ve encountered this situation when the context sentence is supposed to be for one item, but is actually for another. If I find other such context sentences, I’ll post them here.

@Mods what do you think of this?

I agree, I’ve seen this often as well.

I feel like this kind of gets into the weeds of “What the frig is a word, anyway?”

錦織 is apparently a sufficiently recognizable entity that is has its own dictionary entry, but both in terms of reading and meaning, it feels like 錦 maintains its own identity, and the compound word still makes sense when interpreting the constituents on their own; it is a “brocade weave”, or a “weave pertaining to brocade”.

I’m not sufficiently confident in my Japanese to say to what extent 錦 maintains its own identity (I’ve never even used the word), but I feel like this is kind of comparable to using “turkey sandwich” as a context sentence for the word “turkey”, or 苺サンド as an example for 苺 (or サンド).
The “sandwich” is arguably not entirely separable from the “turkey”, because it does rule out the “living organism” sense of the word, but then again, the same could be said for a sentence as a whole.

All of that said, it would be interesting to see a sentence with 錦 outside of a compound, just to see how it works.

Thanks for the question and the ping, I’ll bring this up with the team and I’ll report back.

Update: (53) - Replaced a context sentence and added two new context sentences.

Posting here, so as not to create another thread:

I think, the translation should be “He’s the drapery merchant’s only son”
