So yesterday I finally hit level 60! The old WKStats estimated I’d reach level 60 in December 2030 (I started in 2019 - I’m slow!), so I’m delighted. My all-burn estimation was June 2031, so I’m trying to burn everything before then.
Keeping this as short as I can (that means this will be long!), my interest in Japan came in when I was 11. I started being bullied at school so I was in depression - a Japanese woman came into my class one day visiting schools in my country and I wrote my name in Katakana, looked at photos and tried green tea. Unknown to her she gave me some well needed happiness and the memory stayed with me.
In those days there wasn’t much resources so I couldn’t study Japanese until I was much older. I was very interested in other countries and just studied a bit of German and French.
Fast forward a few years I went through Remember the Kanji. RTK didn’t work for me and then I found WaniKani, and that changed everything. I had studied for a long time but WaniKani really levelled up my Japanese. I think around level 20-something I noticed I could read so much more and with time it got better and better. Now I’m reading 君の名は still being amazed I’ve got to this stage as I am a bookworm.
I’ve had several occasions where a Japanese had commented on my good kanji reading, which makes me really proud and grateful to WaniKani.
My aim now is to burn everything and get reading even more.
My advice to others is to not be afraid to push themselves a little, even if it feels challenging. I’m an extremely slow learner (I started around 2007!), and you’d think I’d be fluent by now, but I’m far from it!
The main mistake I made is I wasted a lot of time going through hiragana, katakana and N5 material over and over and over again for ages and just not going through harder material. One piece of advice I received was to not just study JLPT materials (which I was doing), but also study native materials. This was good advice for me and I wish the younger me had done this sooner.
Finally I like to thank the following (in no particular order because all you guys are great!):
@riya Thank you for all your support you gave me. You were the one who really made me want to push myself into reading books!
@nednettinc If you pop back on the forums again I like to say thank you! I really enjoyed chatting to you and hope things have got better for you!
@Slooshy Thank you as well. I enjoyed talking to you as well and it’s been fun with all the cats and strawberries! I’m glad you haven’t given up and look forward to when you hit level 60 as well!
Keep going you’ve got this!
