I was more like, do I really want to read two volumes about this competition?
Not planning to read this very soon, but maybe at some point we could throw it into the Compulsive Readers pool?
once we’re done with allll the works of our toast-loving Naoki prize winner, is my hunch
Well, I just bought it, so I don’t see why not.
Although there’s also another 恩田陸 in my 積読 that I’d like to read first. I think you may have it too? 木洩れ日に泳ぐ魚. It’s nominated in the mystery club, but don’t think it’s very likely to get picked.
You seem confident that we’ll like him. I very much hope so!
Haha I also want to read that before the other one I see, we will not run out of books to read any time soon
I have another data point: a few weeks ago @Myria watched an interview with him and put two of his books on her want-to-read list, and I know that she is even pickier regarding authors and books than I am
(@Myria could you maybe post that interview here if you still have the link? )
It was one of the interviews linked in the other thread, with the author of チュベローズ:
He visits a book store at the end and picks up random books and talks about them. I read the covers of the books (君のクイズ and 地図と拳) in the video and they both sounded interesting, that‘s where I got the recommendation.
The store clerk that created Shigeaki’s „corner“ is adorable as well.
おやすみ、夢なき子 is everything I ever wanted from a pulp novel. Dark themes, moves fast, kind of absurd but popcorn the whole way through. It’s like 500 pages (in paperback) but 100% worth digging in.
Edit: oh an I feel like people on Natively recently referred to 記憶屋 as a LN? Might be something to be aware of as I know there are a few people in this thread who aren’t fans of the genre.
By the way, as this is general book discussion - I’m in Tokyo for a short bit (leave Tuesday) and want to hit up the biggest and/or best book store I can. I’ve been told Kinokuniya will have the best selection, but anything else I should check out?
Possibly @Naphthalene although I believe you get most of your books from the library and have no idea if you’re even near Tokyo
I always like to go to any random Book-Off I can find – because they’re second hand I buy more books and take more chances than when I’m in new book stores.
Book-Off all the way! Most of them are gigantic, and heaven if you want to buy books for 100yen.
They usually have all the 話題作 as well, so usually you shouldn’t miss out on any of the newer stuff either.
I second (oh, no, I third!) the BookOff recommendation. I think I mostly went to the Akihabara one in Tokyo, it’s right next to the train station and it’s huge (6 floors iirc). And if you definitely can’t find something there, there’s a regular bookstore right across the street (at the corner).
Kinokuniya in Shinjuku was really big the last time I went there. As a bonus, there’s a big Book Off in Shinjuku too (although they are on opposite sides of the station, which makes it annoying to visit both).
There’s also a large Book Off in Ikebukuro sunshine and I also went to a crazy large bookstore around there (but forgot the name).
Generally, though, I do use my local library (which is really large, so I’m usually fine) or I buy online There’s something special for me about visiting a bookstore, but I’m usually overwhelmed and don’t buy anything
