Best grammar book after N4 level?

Thanks for the great information! Does the main Tobira book have exercises? If so, would you say they are good for self study or do they require a back and forth with another person?

The main text looks like it has a bunch of listening exercises (dictation). Sometimes it has other kinds of exercises (fill in the blank onomatopoeia is one I just saw). Grammar exercises are in a separate workbook.

I’m not the best person to ask because I’m not currently doing the exercises. I do bunpro style and make fill in the blank flashcards out of the example sentences with each grammar point, so I’ve only really looked at the grammar sections.

The grammar workbook does look really good for self study though (Chapter 1 has 16+ exercises, none of which say anything about pair work, they all look like drills), here’s a sample:

I just looked at the exercise for Chapter 1 and they all have answers in the back, even the “make your own sentence” ones. The only one there’s no answer for is a longer writing section.

Looking at this is making me want to actually use it lol. It seems thorough.

Thanks. Looks like the amazon link doesn’t work though.

Should be fixed

Oh yeah, now that I see these examples it’s sparking my memory, I did use the workbook. I thought it was really good.

@Juliette
I did Kanzen Master N4 after Genki II. Genki II does cover most of N4 but there were still maybe 15 grammar points or so that were new for me. If you’re studying for the N4, I would recommend going for a N4 prep book. It’s also nice to have a refresher for things that you already know. Otherwise you can probably skip it and go for Tobira. I’ve just started with Tobira and it gives more structure and spreads out the grammar points with reading and exercises. It’s my assumption that pure JLPT prep books are a bit too dry to absorb everything.

Did the same thing. Can recommend.

One more thing I‘d like to recommend: I‘m currently going through this book which I‘ve never heard about but it was recommended by my teacher as a review for the content of Genki I and II. And to be honest, since grammar is my weakest point, this book is kicking my a**

It might be a good start before jumping into one of the post-N4 textbooks.

It looks interesting. Would you mind posting some pictures of what the inside looks like ?

Sure. I will include the one where I realized that I had no idea what I’m doing. I stand by my mistakes and terrible handwriting.

Oh, nice, I used the 中級 one in class when I was around N3. It was pretty good, actually. It’s one of the rare textbooks I have kept over the years.

Thank you ! And are the answers in the book or do you have to have a teacher or buy another book ?

They are in the book. It is a little separate booklet that is glued into the main book but you can remove it which is convenient for checking the answers.
