Autoplay audio is frequently cut off at the start

Example: 輸送
Autoplay audio during review: そう (The ゆ is cut off)

If I press the manual play button afterwards, it is all good. I get ゆ そう .

Browser (PC): Firefox Version 145.0 (64-bit)

What do you need from me to investigate? Let me know and I can gather the relevant information.

Audio output device, e.g. noise cancelling earphones.

You might also try short audio on other websites, e.g. Forvo, Wiktionary.

Low (or zero?) volume background audio (on another tab/app) could be a fix.

Works fine on Wikipedia.

I clicked on “Nihongo” on Wikipedia, with no issues of audio cutting out.

I find it happening for Anki too, with audio autoplay, but only for the first sound played in a long while.

No issue with laptop speaker, only earphones/headphones, though.

  1. Affects speakers too.
  2. “first sound played in a long while“ doesn’t apply to me. It just happened on 3 consecutive reviews.

It may be fair to @Mods

I think there is a website that lists technical information of the device. Scripts? (Another option is email hello@wanikani.com)

JavaScript console error? (press F12) Error on other web browsers?

I have had a similar same issue on wireless headphones, it seems to be some sort of fade in on the headphones which happens when there is no sound and then a short sound.

A trick to solve this has been to put some very quiet lofi as a background to have continuous sound output and then the problem disappear.

Maybe you can test if it is the same for you ?

Since I mentioned Anki audio autoplay + headphones earlier, this fixes the problem for me too. I don’t always put on headphones or earphones, just when I don’t want to bother others. I’ve heard about the solution, but never tried, rather prefer almost silent, just barely any insect/traffic noise.

I picked anything over an hour long from here – lofi background music at DuckDuckGo

Since the OP mentioned speakers too, not sure if it the same problem. It may have to be autoplay, plus enough consecutives. (Does it mean, not all, just 3 consecs and sporadic?)

Nonetheless, it can’t hurt to try a quick fix, as it may help diagnose the problem.

Some sort of audio transfer issue where the wake to transmit is slower than the transmit for audio.

This may be related to a longstanding issue between Firefox and Bluetooth audio. If you’d like, feel free to email us at hello@wanikani.com with your setup details and the devices/browsers you’ve tested so we can look into it further!
