I know there are plenty of similar threads, but I wanted some fresh feedback.
I haven’t studied WaniKani for two years. I was doing really good for a while and got to my current level. Looking at past kanji and vocab, I do still remember quite a bit. But it feels a little fuzzy. I’m worried that if I just reset to level 15 or so, that there might still be some gaps left over from levels 1–15 that I will have forgotten.
I feel like resetting would feel really good and I’m sure it would be a lot easier since I’ve already come this far once before. But it’s still tough since I worked so hard to get to level 23 haha. Though I guess the real goal is to learn, not just to level up.
If you have time, what you could do is try to do some reviews and see how much you remember. If at some point the items of a level just don’t stick, you could reset to that.
At the end of the day, if you feel more comfortable resetting, go for it. I know some people prefer to just power through reviews and have a period of just slowly improving accuracy again, but that’s up for you to decide.
I personally would probably try resetting a few levels first, and then further back if I feel like I know nothing or am struggling too much.
You can always reset to 1 if 15 (or whatever level) isn’t working out, but you can’t go back from 1 to 15 of you realise you’re bored.
If there are certain loose items from lower levels that you feel are tripping you up, you can also manually reset just those from their respective item pages, rather than redo a whole level because you feel like you’re shaky on just a few important items.
Since you have a lot of burned items consider getting the Self-Study Quiz script and try going through the levels individually to see what’s up. I think there are some other burn review methods out there that might work. Otherwise doing what the others suggested is probably fine especially if you’ve been enjoying any kind of japanese content in the meantime.
I reset from 28 → 1 after a four year gap and it was definitely worth it. There was a surprising amount of stuff that I was able to remember, but I definitely forgot most of it the stuff after like level 5. It was a nuclear, but safe approach to getting back into Japanese that I don’t regret. Spending the half year to get back to this level is going to be way less than I’ll have to study overall anyway.
Exactly . A level is just a number. What I would recommend is perhaps reset to like level 15-18, unburn all your Burned items and see how things go. Small gaps in kanji knowledge are completely normal and you can compensate through additional practice, reading, etc.
I might try that. I do have a lot of burned items, so unburning them all might be a bit much haha. But I’ll need to review them with a script see what I know. Thank you!!
I would get Ultimate Reorder script, and work you way through reviews starting at the lowest levels. When you get a level where you are not comfortable with your percentage correct, reset to that level.
I’ve decided to take the plunge and reset. I thought about some of the alternate suggestions, but I think this is best for me! I’m not in a hurry so I don’t mind reviewing things I’ve done. It’ll also help me ease back into it after so long—and I’m sure I’ll level up a lot faster this time around. Thanks everyone!!
