Returning after 2.5 years - Reset?

2300 reviews, 3000 burned items of which i don’t all remember.

Going through the reviews and burned items with a reorder script really feels like slamming your head against a wall which makes resetting seem the only plausible option…

You can try going through every level separately using the self-study quiz, before doing a full reset. That way, you can identify from which levels you still know most of the stuff and then reset to the highest level where you had decent results so that you don’t have to go through all the levels again. It’ll probably take some time, since you’re at level 35, but less time than starting from level 1 again.

I reset from level 22 to level 1 after a long break and regret it. I would consider going back a few levels at a time to see where you feel comfortable. Also, consider how long it will take to get back to level 35…a minimum of 35 weeks. A month of review to not lose nine might be worth it. At least, that’s what I wish I had done.

It depends. Have you been studying or using Japanese during those 2.5 years in any way? If so I wouldn’t reset, if it’s just some words you don’t remember. But, you could reset individual items or radicals if you need them for the new items you learn, or if you encounter them in the wild. You could always reach level 60 and reset, or reinforce the earlier levels on kaniwani.

Not sure how applicable this will be to you since we are different levels, but I came back to WaniKani after an almost 3 year absent and reset all the way back to level 1. I am just now back to where I was when I reset.

My experience:

  • For the most part I did pretty well with items that I had burned. I was either able to recognize them instantly or recommitted them to memory really quickly and easily.
  • This was also mostly true for items that I had gotten to Enlightened, but these were mostly items with straightforward meanings and/or readings. Oddball vocab was much more difficult to remember and but would stick pretty quickly after doing the lesson plus a few reviews.
  • Anything that would’ve been Master or below was gone from my memory with some rare exceptions.
  • Items which I would have done just before quitting were almost all unrecognizable to me.
  • I was also continuing to study Japanese during this time with a focus on speaking so that helped my memory a bit as well when I reset.

You might want to go through the “Extra Study” tab on the dashboard check your memory. You can always use something like Anki and WK pack to force yourself to review the burned items after resetting to a level where you feel you don’t recognize the items that well or at all.

I reset from level 23 2 years ago all the way back to level 1.

I don’t regret it. Yes, I could have reset to a higher level, but a total reset felt like the fresh start I was looking. I hadn’t forgotten all the kanji and words, I actually came back home after living in Japan for 2.5 years when I chose to reset. Part of the reason was also that many translations and mnemonics had changed over that time (I’m sure the radical “fingers” used to be “nailbat”.

Anyways, the need for a fresh start and the small frustration lead me to a total reset and I’m happy I did it.

The self-study quiz mentioned by @NeoArcturus sounds like a good solution to help decide which level to reset to if you decide to reset.

Thanks for all the helpful replies, everyone.

I’m gonna go with the recommendation by @NeoArcturus and see where my knowledge stops and reset to there and while i have considered resetting to 1, loosing so much progress feels a bit… sad? Welp I’d be fine resetting to lvl10 all things considered but i should probably go and start the self studies before deciding that.
