は can be either a subject marker or a contrastive element marker (to quote my Basic Dictionary of Japanese Grammar). In this case I think it’s the latter.

Thanks for the explanation. I’ve only watched the animation & have the 12 Aria the Animation manga volumes so was trying to navigate the book club only to find myself here at the start of things so to speak.
